During the Warring States period, there were seven major states fighting for dominance: the Qi (齊/齐), the Chu (楚), the Yan (燕), the Han (韓/韩), the Zhao (趙/赵), the Wei (魏) and the Qin (秦). Each of these states was ruled by a King (王) that was more or less equal to both the other kings as well as the actual Zhou emperor who was more of a figurehead during this time due to his complete lack of political or military power. The main object of each state was to completely dominate the other six states and unite China under their rule.
Alliances
Due to there being seven states, at the beginning there WERE alliances made. Before any of the states fell, the alliances were like so [NOT HISTORICALLY ACCURATE 8D]:
The Triumvirate - Qi : Han : Zhao
Terrible Two - Chu : Yan
Dark Horse Pair - Qin : Wei
Of course, alliances quickly soured as the number of opponents decreased. None of the kings ever lost sight of their true goal: to completely crush the others, no matter what the cost.
Kings
Each king stressed different things and had different ideas for how they would rule over China. Thus, these fundamental differences were at the core of why the states couldn't get along. Not to mention, each king was power-hungry to a degree, so they wanted very much to rule over China all by themselves.
