Scientific Publication - An existing paradigm / model:

Scientific writing (journal papers, book chapters, and complete books) is a functioning and existing form of documentation and backup. In the modern scheme it is a required part of all (legitimate) scientific research. It serves a number of purposes: 1) dissemination of information; 2) preservation of information; and 3) a platform for public scrutiny and debate. As such, the process of documentation can be a more arduous component of the research effort than the actual experimental and analytical processes.
