The Naegling (more commonly known as the Spectrum Bow) is one of five 'legendary' or 'divine' weapons which Turaga Dlakii received on Mata Nui. It was adopted by Dreiken, the Toa of Ice.

History

As with its brother weapons - - an orb of the purest light dubbed Supernova; a giant, lightning-charged blade dubbed Exaccus; the dual lances of flame dubbed the Warspears; and the dark blade Ivaldi - - the Naegling was discovered within a vault built into the six pillars surrounding the Kini-Nui on Mata Nui. Where it came from and how it got into the vault remains a mystery. Shortly before the Unknown Turaga story started, Beliwa, the Toa of Demons, was researching these weapons, at which point he met Proto D, the last of the Dragon Matoran, as well as the last Matoran left on Mata Nui. In their research, they found that if a 'key of darkness' broke a seal surrounding the Kini-Nui, the weapons would be unlocked. Shortly after, Beliwa left in search of the 'key'.

At some point after Beliwa returned, Dreiken obtained the Naegling.

Since then, the Naegling has been Dreiken's weapon of choice. With it, he aided in the destruction of Makuta Doomed and brought down a large number of Shadow Dragons. During Dreiken's brief time as a Toa Hordika, the Naegling disappeared (though its powers remained in Dreiken's Rhotuka spinners), but was restored when Lord Toa Harkha reversed the Hordika venom.

Powers

The Naegling posesses only one power: it fires bolts of pulsing light. These bolts, referred to as "Spectrum" due to their similarity to Dreiken's famous attack, are ten times more powerful than Dreiken's original Spectrum bolts, capable of slicing through almost anything. Protosteel will not be cut by the bolts; instead, the bolts start to melt the metal. Also, the bolts can cut through a shield generated by a Kanohi Hau or Kanohi Aki, but not those of a Hau Nuva or an Aki Nuva.

Trivia

  • The physical appearance of the Naegling, albeit with heavy alterations, originated from the Game Boy Advance versions of Fire Emblem. It was originally a Sniper's bow, later recoloured and altered.
  • The name Naegling originates from the old English epic, Beowulf. It was the name of one of the swords Beowulf used to fight the dragon with. It was also used in the book "Eldest" by Christopher Paloni, as the name of the sword used by the ancient Dragon Rider Oromis. Prior to the usage of this name, the Naegling was simply called the Spectrum Bow, a name which is still commonly used.
