The Ivaldi (sometimes referred to as the Shadowblade) is one of five 'legendary' or 'divine' weapons which Turaga Dlakii received on Mata Nui. It was adopted by the Le-Matoran Lai, and the sword proceeded to transform Lai into a Toa of Shadows.

History

As with its brother weapons - - an orb of the purest light dubbed Supernova; a giant, lightning-charged blade dubbed Exaccus; the dual lances of flame dubbed the Warspears; and the famous Spectrum Bow, now called Naegling - - the Ivaldi was discovered within a vault built into the six pillars surrounding the Kini-Nui on Mata Nui. Where it came from and how it got into the vault remains a mystery. Shortly before the Unknown Turaga story started, Beliwa, the Toa of Demons, was researching these weapons, at which point he met Proto D, the last of the Dragon Matoran, as well as the last Matoran left on Mata Nui. In their research, they found that if a 'key of darkness' broke a seal surrounding the Kini-Nui, the weapons would be unlocked. Shortly after, Beliwa left in search of the 'key'.

When Turaga Dlakii and his forces arrived on Mata Nui, they came across Proto D. After a battle in the cavern networks of Po-Wahi, Beliwa returned with the 'key'. Proto D led the group to Kini-Nui, at which Beliwa removed the seal on the temple. In response to the seal's removal, five compartments opened in the temple's six pillars. Dlakii, Thekoo, Dreiken and iKKF took a weapon each - Dlakii absorbed the orb of light into his body, boosting his power; Dreiken claimed Naegling, drawn by its colouring identical to his own; iKKF claimed the Warspears, liking to have two weapons with long reach; and Thekoo claimed Exaccus, preferring it to the relatively small Ivaldi. Given that he was not a Toa, Lai was not in any hurry to claim Ivaldi, but upon Dlakii's suggestion, he placed his right hand on it. The sword emitted a blinding light, engulfing Lai and transforming him into a Toa of Shadows.

Since his transformation, Lai has always kept the Ivaldi by his side. With it, he has brought down countless Rahkshi and Shadow Dragons, nearly slain Makuta Doomed, and destroyed two of the worst enemies he and Dlakii have ever faced. When Lai was mutated into a Toa Hordika for a brief period of time, the Ivaldi disappeared, but was restored when Toa Harkha reversed Lai's Hordika state, this time with additional powers.

Powers

The Ivaldi's true powers remain subject to debate. It is thought to contain Toa power, which would explain Lai's transformation into a Toa. Why it made Lai into a Toa of Shadows is a mystery. One theory is that it contained a form of energy which reacted to Lai's personality; taking his relatively dark and negative mindset and reflecting it with the power of Darkness. Furthermore, it can be used to channel Lai's power over darkness, and for a time, using the Ivaldi was the only way Lai could use the darkness.

When Lord Harkha reverted Lai out of his Toa Hordika form, he granted the Ivaldi an additional power: from the power of Lai's Rhotuka Spinners, he made the Ivaldi able to open the Zone of Darkness, effectively releasing the Zivon. Later on, Lai put this power to good use, imprisoning the severely weakened Lord of the Shadow Dragons in the Zone.
