The Working Families Party, often referred to as the WFP, can refer to 2 different parties. One was founded in 1998 and still exists today. The other was the Northeast's de facto regional Democratic Party during a short period of Governor Robert Hudson's term. This article deals with the latter.
History
The Working Families Party was founded in 2012 following Hudson's speech at the Republican convention, in which he endorsed Republican presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. This appearance and endorsement resulted in a mutiny by regional Democrats, who voted 54 votes to 4 in favor of dissolving, reorganizing under the banner of the Working Families Party [1]. Six members of the Smokers Rights Party also joined them, giving Working Families 61 members in the Northeast legislature. This number was increased to 66 in the 2012 election.
Thing changed in early 2013 when Hudson announced he was leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent. Working Families Party members then began to transition back to the Democratic Party and Working Families returned to its pre-Hudson status [2].
