Political Career
Overview
- Lieutenant Governor of the Big Sky Country 2020 - 2025
- House Majority Leader in the Big Sky Country Regional Legislature 2019 - 2020
- Member of the Big Sky Country House of Representatives, representing Utah's 12th regional district, 2014 - 2025
BSC House of Representatives
In 2014 Carry Ann was elected to represent her home district (Utah 12) of Salt Lake City She handily won re-election in 2016 and 2018. After Majority Leader Michael Worthams resigned from his seat and was elected to the United States House of Representatives the young Carry Ann was chosen by the Republican Caucus to lead the Majority. This was particularly important as Governor Daniel Mallory had just been defeated in an election by Damien Austin. Carry Ann became a passionate leader in the House and after Republican Lieutenant Governor David Anderson had refused to serve under Governor Damien Austin the Republican Caucus approached her to run in the 2020 special election of a new Lieutenant Governor.
2020 Special Election
At first Carry Ann showed no interest in seeking the office of Lieutenant Governor. She told reporters in 2019, "I did not enter politics for a fancy title or a nice office." Former Majority Leader Michael Worthams filed with the FEC in early 2019 to seek the Lieutenant Governorship. After heavy lobbying of the Big Sky Country Republican Party, Carry Ann filed with the FEC a week before the filing deadline to seek the office. Michael Worthams bowed out of the race the same day.
Her opponent was the staunchly conservative Democratic Minority Leader Lucien Kaine. It was widely known that Carry Ann Yearling and Governor Damien Austin had a hard time working together on legislation and that Mr. Kaine was the Governor's choice. He turned out to be a formidable candidate. The race began and soon turned out to be one of the dirtiest in the region's history. Governor Austin did what he could to support his Minority Leader in the election. Both sides attacked each other heavily, questioning each other's abilities, honesty and integrity. Later Carry Ann would tell reporters, "I am sorry about the way the race turned out. I respect both Governor Austin and Minority Leader Kaine."
The race was interesting for the fact the Carry Ann Yearling moved to the left of Lucien Kaine on several issues such as the environment and immigration. She made it very clear that she opposes an opening of ANWR. She told supporters on the campaign trail, "While I worked hard in the legislature last session to create alternatives to America’s oil dependence, through acts such as the Tax Credits for Solar Projects Act, my opponent already gave up on the great prospect of alternative energies and instead decided to destroy Alaska’s beautiful natural heritage to deepen America’s dependence on oil even further. [...] "With me ANWR will not be opened unless it is truly necessary and I know we have plenty of options left to explore." Lucien Kaine received strong support on the trail from Governor Austin while Carry Yearling was supported on the trail by Senator Keiko Kagura and Senator Valeria Smith. Kaine was not able to close the gap as half polls were published but narrowed Carry Ann Yearling's lead down by a percent on election day. With 49.32% and a lead of 49,309 votes Carry Ann Yearling was elected as 5th Lieutenant Governor of the Big Sky Country and thus leader of the Big Sky Country Republican Party.
First Term as Lieutenant Governor
Following Governor Damien Austin's unexpected resignation a deal was struck to allow the Democratic Party to nominate a successor to serve for the remainder of the term until the next election. Carry Ann began working in her new position passing such key legislation such as the "Supporting Education for Children with Disabilities Act", the "Fuel the BSC with Biofuel Act" or the "Healthy School Drinks Resolution". Another key legislation signed into law by Governor McLaughlin was the "Reduce Alcohal Abuse By Minors Act." She recently filed with the FEC as running mate of Senator Keiko Kagura in the 2022 Gubernatorial election, challenging Governor Tom McLaughlin and his running mate the liberal Graham Cummings. As Lieutenant Governor Carry remains leader of the Republican House Caucus.
Second Term as Lieutenant Governor
In 2022 Carry Yearling ran as running mate of Senator Keiko Kagura against Democratic Governor Tom McLaughlin and his running mate Graham Cummings. Following Keiko Kagura's victory it was also confirmed that Carry Ann had been re-elected to serve for another four years as the region's Lieutenant Governor. She carried the states of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Utah, Kansas and North Dakota while her opponent Graham Cummings only carried Oklahoma, Alaska and South Dakota. She began her second term following the inauguration of Governor Kagura.
Her agenda focuses mainly on economic growth and stimulus but also security and education. Some key legislation she passed during her second term include the "New Capital Invenstment Incentives Act". the "Safe Schools Act of 2024" and the "Growing Business in BSC Act". She also introduced the "Higher Education Engineering Partnership Act" which is currently being considered by the BSC Senate.
In 2025, less than a year to the end of her second term Carry Yearling offered Governor Keiko Kagura her resignation from all offices. She mentioned as reasons the need to be with her husband James, who's disease was constantly worsening and the need to be with her daughter during these hard times. She returned to Salt Lake City three weeks before Christmas, selling her Oklahoma City home.
Shortly after her return to Salt Lake City Carry Yearling accepted a position teaching business at the University of Utah.
