The 2012 French presidential election was held to elect the president of France for a five-year term. The winner was incumbent president Segolene Royal.
Overview
Segolene Royal of the Socialist Party (PS) defeated the Popular Union (UP) candidate. The Popular Union was the successor to the Union for a Popular Movement, formed prior to the election by the UMP's 2007 presidential candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy. The presidential election was held simultaneously with a parliamentary election, in which the PS led coalition's majority was reduced to 5 seats.
