The 2017 French presidential election was held to elect the president of France for a five-year term. The winner was incumbent president Segolene Royal.

Overview
Segolene Royal of the Socialist Party (PS) defeated Popular Union (UP) candidate, Pierre Lellouche, in a second round of voting after no single candidate managed to achieve an absolute majority in the first round. The presidential election was held simultaneously with a parliamentary election.

Aftermath
The subsequent UP-PS grand coalition saw Lellouche appointed Prime Minister by Royal, and signaled the end of the broad left PS led coalition that had governed France for the past decade.
