Born in Indianapolis, IN on June 27, 1970, J. Robert Cook graduated from Indiana University at Indianapolis in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While in school, he served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT-B with the Lawrence Township Volunteer Fire Department. Wanting to continue in the fire service while pursuing a MA in Political Science, he received a position on the City of Tulsa Fire Department and moved to Oklahoma in 1994. He was conferred a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1997 and continued to serve on the Tulsa Fire Department, where he became a batallion chief before leaving the fire service to run for U.S. House in 2000. He was elected by a wide majority after gaining the support of the Tulsa FOP and other public service unions, odd for a Republican, and then resigned due to health and personal issues shortly after the election of Elizabeth Warren to President of the United States. Rumors within the RNC state that Cook had issues with kitten huffing and pools of green Jello, and he retired to his ranch near Tulsa, Oklahoma in early 2008.
Life in Tulsa kept Cook and his wife away from their extended family, and the death of his parents in a tragic wood-chipper incident, along with legal troubles for his in-laws caused him to move back to Morgan County, Indiana in March of 2008.
Cook maintains several residences, although his official town of residence, voter registration information, and drivers license record currently state Brooklyn, Indiana (pop. 1572) as his formal primary home. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010.
Cook remains active in the fire service, having served on the Oklahoma Fire Chiefs Association Board of Directors. He also consults from time to time with the US Fire Administration, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Indiana Volunteer Fireman's Association. He currently serves as Captain of the Martinsville, Indiana Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division and a member of the Morgan County EMS Association, in addition to his duties representing the Fourth Indiana House District.
Cook is rumored to be close friends with Tim Cargill, Jack Magruder, and Alan Sickles.
