Born to a working-class auto manufacturing family; Elizabeth was blessed with cunning wits, high intelligence, and a concern for others that far exceeded her younger brother, Seth. She worked as a seamstress through high school and was accepted to Vassar College in New York. She concentrated her studies in business, political science and Women's Studies.
