First facing a conservative Republican, Marcus Jamble, and a moderate Democrat, Harry Deant, he was able to convince the first to drop out and endorse him. In election day, he defeated Deant by a high margin, getting the vote of most Republicans and independents. Comfort served in the Mississippi Valley legislature, sometimes proposing bills that the republicans found too conservative. He was the president of the short-lived Mississippi Valley regional Senate and the only non-republican member from the state of Mississippi.
