Nathaniel grew up with his two parents, Art and Mary, in a Baptist household where he was born in Nashville, TN. His father was a lawyer, and his mother stayed at home. Nathaniel was educated in the public school system, and worked his way through Tennessee State studying law. Upon graduating, he signed up to the military to serve in the Gulf War. After the war, he stood for city council, and played a role in Mayor Bredesen of Nashville's urban regeneration scheme.

Nathaniel is considered to be an economic populist, but somewhat conservative on some social issues. He strongly favours clean coal development, and farm subsidies, and considers urban regeneration to be a high priority. He lives with his wife, Valerie, and two children Rupert (Born 1995) and Samuel (Born 2000).
