Biography

Matt was born in Hagerstown, Maryland on February 9th, 1957. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1975, serving for four uneventful years in Germany. After that, he enrolled at the University of Maryland in 1979, earning his Bachelor's in mathematics in 1983 and his Master's in Civil Engineering in 1985.

In 1985, he moved to Sparks, MD to work for Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson. His work took him to construction sites around the state. In the course of working on these projects, he established working relationships with political figures at all level of government. Upon his retirement in 2009, he moved back to Hagerstown.

2010 Elections

He used his contacts to earn the nomination for the sixth congressional seat vacated by the retiring incumbent, and won election in 2010 comfortably in an otherwise disastrous year for Republicans in his region.

Shortly after his election, he attended a conference discussing the future of the Atlantic Seaboard Republican Party. Addressing the demoralized group, he said rebuilding the regional party was "the largest-scale, most challenging project I've ever seen."
