Biographical

Dallas Arteaga was born to an American mother and Cuban political refugee father in 1981.During high school and college, Dallas played Varsity and Division I baseball as a talented third baseman. Noted for both his skills on the field and in the classroom, Arteaga would earn a scholarship to attend Florida Atlantic University. He was the first in his family to attend college, accepting a commission as an Ensign in the United States Coast Guard following college at Florida Atlantic University. He would eventually retire from reserve duty as a commander. Arteaga was employed following college at a leading business solutions consulting firm, eventually attaining managing partner status. He became active in politics, fighting for environmental preservation, expanded business opportunities, and a more efficient government - first on the city council in Hialeah and later as a regional representative.

In 2019, State Rep. Arteaga was appointed by Gulf Coast Governor Kowalchuk to serve as the Lieutenant Governor of the Gulf Coast. He served for the remainder of the term, retiring in 2020. His most notable achievments were aggressively fighting attempts to limit off-shore oil development as well as overcoming partisan ideology to enact charter school support legislation. Arteaga withdrew from elected politics in 2020 to focus on growing his small business consulting firm, Garcia Consulting, of which he was managing partner.

Dallas Arteaga's respite from politics was shortlived. With a special election for the 21st Congressional District opening up, Arteaga emerged as the consesus standard bearer for the Republican Party, carving a middle path between a more liberal primary opponent and more conservative one put forward by the religious right.

Political Thinking

Arteaga is known for his common sense style, often willing to negotiate with the oppositon while maintaining clear principles on important issues. He is respected on both sides of the aisle and is considered a leading light and rising star of the resident Cuban American population. Rep. Arteaga is committed to maintaining a competitive American economy, responsible budgeting, and common sense entitlement reforms.

Voting Record

2019-2020 Lieutenant Governor

Dallas Artega was appointed by Governor Kowalchuck to serve as the Lt. Governor of the Gulf Coast following the resignation of Lt. Governor Charlie Beck (R-FL). Lt. Governor Arteaga took noted stands against attempts by Democrats effectively halt future developing of offshore oil. His most prominent proposal was one to expand charter school opportunities throughout the region in the aftermath of the repeal of school choice measures by the Governor. While Arteaga at times clashed with the administration, his time in office was marked by increased levels of bi-partisanship and a less ideological bent than in previous years. Arteaga would retire from elected office at the end of his term.

2021 Florida House Race Special Election

While at the outset considered a prime pick-up opportunity for Democrats, Arteaga defeated his general election opponent handily, with 54.45% of the vote to 43.21%.

Key Positions

Congressman Arteaga took a particularly strong stand in favor of the line-item veto amendment to the constitution. Of the veto, he was qouted for saying, "Until this fiscal nightmare is controlled and the debt to our grandchildren is eliminated, I will not stop fighting for it." While the amendment was overwhelmingly defeated by members of both parties, Arteaga staunchly defended and supported it to the end.

Key Votes

Rep. Arteaga took a vocal stand in support of the Cameron-Jackson Investment Promotion Ac, voting for it shortly after being elected to Congress. He advocated for it as a key tool to spur growth, increase jobs, and spread the gains of investment more among lower class Americans.

On the LASS House Committee, Rep. Arteaga, as Ranking Member, led the defeat of two signature Democratic initiatives: The Madison Ballentine Rights of Labor act aimed at repealing Taft-Hartley and the Social Security Protection Act which would have raised taxes on almost 15% of Americans. These two defeats were lauded as coups for the Republican House Minority.

Committee assignments

Rep. Arteaga was appointed to serve on the Labor, Agriculture, and Social Services Committee. Due to activity and leadership, Arteaga was promoted to Ranking Member, the position he currently holds.
