Désirée Payne is the Junior Senator from New England. She has served in that post since her appointment by Governor Thomas Straw in 2017, before which she was Mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life

Désirée Payne was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Madeleine Landry and George Payne. Her mother was a first-generation French immigrant. Her father was a manufacturing worker for much of his life, becoming heavily involved in union activities toward the end of his career. Désirée attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, pursuing a double major in French and Social Thought and Political Economy.
