Early Life and Career

Andrew Morrison was born on February 22, 1966, in Big Rapids, Michigan. His parents worked together in their family dental practice. Both his grandfather and his uncle worked for Ford Motor Company.

Despite being expected to follow his parents and eventually take over the family dental practice, Morrison instead aspired to become a teacher. He attended Central Michigan University from 1984-1988 and graduated with his teaching degree. Just six years later, in 1994, he was hired by his alma mater as a professor. Morrison taught at Central Michigan for fifteen years before leaving his post in May of 2009.

Run for Congress

A lifelong Republican, Morrison became angry with what he considered his failing government after the 2006 midterm elections. Morrison began contemplating a role in politics, but declined to run for office in 2008. However, with the retirement of Representative Dave Camp in 2008, Morrison decided to run for the open seat in Michigan's 4th Congressional District. He resigned his teaching position at Central Michigan in 2009 and ended up winning the Republican primary by a twelve-point margin. He went on to win the 2009 special election by 6 points in the Republican-leaning district.
