“Doctor Octopus”
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils: Mark Bagley
Inker: Art Thibert
Editor: Ralph Macchio
• Peter’s Social Studies teacher gives an assignment for the students to prepare an oral report in which they pretend to be a super-hero. The assignment is to be detailed down to the persona’s powers and origins.
• Otto Octavius awakes in a research facility with the mechanical arm harness he was wearing in Ultimate Spider-Man 3 grafted to his body. His eyes are also damaged and bandaged. This is a result of the explosion that occurred at Osborn industries in Ultimate Spider-Man 4.
• Gwen Stacy transfers to Midtown High.
• A Dr. Pym confers with Otto Octavius about his injuries. He tells him that he suffered severe trauma to his optic nerves and other wound to his face and neck. He also tells him that his experimental metallic arms have fused to his body and seem to be locked into his central nervous system. He tells Otto that he has been in a coma for three months and he is not authorized to tell him his location.
• Otto is angered that no one attempted to remove the metallic arms and attacks the scientists that are watching over him, demanding to know where he is.
• Kong is lying in bed, thinking about the class assignment, and pieces together the events of the last few months to determine that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
Notes:
- Liz Allan makes a reference that her uncle is missing and hints that he may have been a mutant.
- Kong makes a reference to the growing mutant population and references a mutant with “big red laser beams shooting out of their eyes”.
- Dr. Octavius has written an essay about his metallic arms in Scientific America.
- Dr. Pym makes a reference to a paper written about the genetics of Otto's accident by a Dr. Reed---. He is cut off before he can finish the name of the paper's author. Though not specified, this most likely refers to Reed Richards. Dr. Pym is also most likely Hank Pym (Giant-Man) since he is specified to work for the government.
