Frequently asked questions

(note to tribe: This FAQ is copied from the website and is pretty stale. It would be nice to convert it to present tense and update the information, where appropriate)

How do I take part in tribal discussions?

Once the tribe is formed members will be emailed notification and asked to log into the tribewanted.com community. The community will be a secure online meeting place for tribe members to chat, share ideas and to vote on key tribal issues.

What is a TribeLog and how do I get one?

A TribeLog is one minute film that any member of the tribe can send into tribewanted.com to be posted on the community. It is not compulsory to make a film nor does it have to be of professional quality. Films can be made with digi cams, web cams or mobile phones! Your TribeLog is your shout, a chance to show-off, or advertise something. All TribeLogs will be checked for content before they are posted on the tribewanted.com community.

How do I vote on tribal issues?

Each tribal issue that requires a vote will be emailed to every member of the tribe. Members will then have a certain length of time (probably 1-2 weeks) to vote on the issue. Once votes have been collected results will be posted and the decision will be put into action!

How do I put myself forward for the position of Tribal Chief?

Once the tribe is formed all tribal members that are interested will send in a short film as to why they think they should be one of 12 Chiefs. The tribe will then vote on who they want to be elected. The more friends you have in the tribe at this point the more votes you are likely to get! Once the top 12 have been elected they will be presented to the tribe and be given names by the tribe. The 12 elected Chiefs will then meet with the founding Chiefs to plan which month in the year they will be Chief on Vorovoro!

How will I be able to watch Tribal TV?

Nomads, Hunters, Warriors and Tribal TV subscribers will be able to login and watch Tribal TV anytime. Tribal TV will be filmed as a documentary style adventure story – with programmes being aired on-demand each week through the tribewanted.com community. Tribal TV will follow the forming of the tribe, all aspects of the development of Vorovoro and the lives of its tribal members.

How do I reserve my stay on Vorovoro?

Once the tribe is formed all tribe members will be able to reserve their stay on Vorovoro through the tribewanted.com community. There will be a simple reservation system where members select the day of arrival and the day of departure from the island. This will be dependent on two things:

  • Your length of membership - 7 nights in year 1 for Nomads. 14 nights in years 1 or 2 for Hunters. Or 21 nights in years 1, 2 or 3 for Warriors.
  • Availability of space on the island. There will be no more that 100 tribe members on the 200 acre island at any one time.

How long can I stay?

You can stay the number of nights your membership permits: 7 nights for Nomads in year 1, 14 nights for Hunters in years 1 or 2, and 21 nights for Warriors in years 1, 2 or 3.

Is it compulsory for all members to travel to Vorovoro?

As a member of the tribe it is NOT compulsory to travel to and stay on Vorovoro. You can simply choose to play an active part in the tribewanted.com community influencing the development of the tribe and the island. It may also be that you are not sure at this stage whether you will be able to get the time and money to travel to Fiji.

How do I get there?

More and more round-the-world tickets and international flights are stopping off in Fiji, on their way to and from Australia and New Zealand. As a result, getting to Fiji is becoming cheaper all the time. Almost all international flights land in Nadi (pronounced ‘Nandee’) on the east coast of Vita Levu, Fiji’s main island. From here tribe members will need to catch a short and cheap domestic flight to the outer islands where they will be picked-up and taken to Vorovoro.

Where and when can I book my flights to Fiji?

Tribe Members can arrive into Fiji at anytime but they will not be allowed onto Vorovoro until their confirmed reservation date. Flights can be booked through a number of travel agents. Full recommendations and tribal travel partners will be provided through the tribewanted.com community when the tribe is formed.

How do I offset my flights?

Climate Care has online CO2 calculators to let you work how your key activities impact on the climate. Using the flights calculator Tribe members can simply enter their destinations and find out the CO2 emissions from that journey and the cost to offset it. A return trip from London to Fiji generates around 4.5 tonnes CO2 – the same that from a years worth of energy use by an average UK home. This costs £34 to offset, and the money will finance sustainable energy projects to reduce emissions by the same amount, while helping communities in the developing world at the same time. To find out more or start offsetting your CO2 emissions visit www.climatecare.org.

Where can I book my domestic flight in Fiji?

All details as to how and where you can book your domestic flight in Fiji will be given to tribe members once the tribe is formed. All you need to know at this stage is that it is easy and cheap to sort out!

Do I need to arrange a visa before travelling to Fiji?

No. When you arrive into Fiji you will be issued with a free four month tourist visa.

What kind of travel insurance do I need?

Information about recommended travel insurance will be posted on the tribewanted.com community when the tribe is formed. However, knowing the endless possibilities on Vorovoro we would encourage insurance that covers adventurous activities.

What happens when I get to the local airport in Fiji?

Once your travel details and reservation has been confirmed the tribewanted team will meet you from the local airport where you will then be driven for 25 minutes to the jetty. From there a 25 minute boat ride will take you to the beach and Vorovoro.

Where else can I go before or after my stay on Vorovoro?

There are many other fantastic places to visit in a country as diverse as Fiji. Tribewanted is building a number of partnerships in different parts of the country and on more traditional tourist islands so that the tribe will have a wealth of information and options to travel and stay in other parts of Fiji.

What costs will I need to budget for staying on Vorovoro?

All food and accommodation is included in your membership fee. Some activities and entertainment will also be included. The main costs you will need to budget for will be your bar tab (if the tribe decide they would like a beach bar!), phone calls, and any adventurous activities that use specialist equipment and instruction, ie Scuba Diving.

What kind of accommodation will there be on Vorovoro?

This is one of the main challenges for the tribe. At present there is limited accommodation on Vorovoro. Through the leadership of the 12 Chiefs and the tribewanted team, the tribe will help design and build the accommodation. All issues will be considered in terms of comfort, aesthetics and the impact on the environment. It is safe to say that the earlier you visit Vorovoro the less accommodation there will be. Some tribe members might plan to wait until there is proper sleeping quarters, whilst the more adventurous might like to be part of the building process itself!

What kind of food will there be on Vorovoro?

Fresh seafood and island-grown fruits and vegetables will provide the foundation for the tribal diet. Local Fijian cooks will be employed by tribewanted who, alongside willing tribal volunteers, will keep the tribe well fed throughout their stay. Tribe members might also suggest recipes and different ways of growing and preparing food, bringing an international and unique flavour to tribal life.

What will the washing facilities be like on Vorovoro?

Again, this intricate and important part of tribal life will be one of the first things to be discussed on tribewanted.com. How waste is managed on the island is a very important issue and the tribe will have to design the most effective and environmentally friendly solution possible.

How many people will be staying on Vorovoro?

Up to 100 tribe members will be staying on Vorovoro at any one time. Although this seems like a lot, in fact the island itself is large enough to accommodate quite a few more. The main living space will be spread out over a flat 20 acre area dotted with coconut palms. Having up to 100 on the island at any one time will be great for sports and entertainment nights!

What can I expect to do on Vorovoro?

What can’t you expect to do? Vorovoro provides an opportunity to turn a day to day existence into an unforgettable experience. The most exciting thing is that the tribe will create the experience themselves: whether its the style of living, the type of entertainment, or the range if activities. Be it a dawn yoga session on the secret beach, a tribal gig on sunset stage, a global debate, a mini-island Olympics, volunteering on a local community project, mastering a Fijian warrior dance, snorkelling, diving, surfing, reading, writing and recoding music, or simply chilling out in a hammock with a cold beer – Vorovoro and the tribe have the potential to create an unparalleled experience.

Will I be mixing with people from the local Fijian communities?

Yes. As well as Tui Mali and his family, tribewanted will be employing local Fijians for all kinds of roles in the development of Vorovoro. Beyond the island itself, tribe members will be able to visit the fishing villages on the nearby island and spend time with the people that live there.

What happens if I get ill or injured?

There is a private doctor in the local town – within an hours travel at anytime of day or night from Vorovoro. There is also a public hospital. The tribewanted team will all be trained in first aid and crisis management. No injections are required for Fiji.

Will there be internet and phone access on Vorovoro?

Yes. You will be able to make paid calls and have free limited access to the internet from Vorovoro.

What is the climate and wildlife like on Vorovoro?

Hot! Tropical, actually. ‘Summer’ (when there is less rain) runs from April to November. December to March sees more heavy rains and the occasional storm and strong winds. Regardless of season, make sure you bring your high factor sun cream. The only other thing that takes some time to get used to are the few bites that you are likely to be given as a welcome ‘hello’ from the local mossies. These aren’t bad as the sea-breeze keeps the beach front area clear. Although Vorovoro has a ‘jungle’ covering, it does not come with all the dangerous jungle wildlife. The biggest danger on Vorovoro is the sun!

Will I be filmed on Vorovoro?

Tribal TV will be following most aspects of the development of the tribe and Vorovoro. So if you come to stay on Vorovoro you can expect to appear on tribal TV. It is tribewanted’s aim to meet as many of the tribe as possible. However this will not be done in an intrusive 24/7 reality TV style format. Tribewanted is not looking to manufacture drama out of set-up scenarios – rather the aim of documenting the adventure is to relay the story to the rest of the tribe around the world. Those sitting at home watching tribal TV will, in time, go from being viewers to characters in the story itself!
