Weight Watchers

From Thikipedia

Weight Watchers was formed in 1987 by a group of humanitarian workers as a vigil group to maintain awareness of the plight of the hostage Terry Waite. The inconsistency in spelling between Mr. Waite's name and that of Weight Watchers was due to a clerical error that was never corrected.

The group maintained round the clock candle vigils waiting for Waite's release. Money was a big issue and the group faced financial ruin in 1990 as a result of the Great Candle Shortage. In an inspired move the founding members of the group took advantage of the original clerical error and turned the group into an appropriately named slimming club with the added selling point that members could feel at one with the starving Waite as they shed pounds.

After Waite's release in 1991 the group continued with their slimming endeavours and welcomed Waite into their fold as their new CEO - a position that he still holds to this day.
