A monger (from the Latin, Mungus, meaning 'keeper of beans') is a person, persons or business that mongs (pronounced mungs) a product of some sort. It is difficult to say how many things are monged and in what way; the list of goods that can be monged, and hence, the various different ways in which the monging must occur is constantly changing.
There are a few things that have been monged for a long time - long enough that their names have become a part of the English language:
- Fishmonger
- Ironmonger
- Cheesemonger
- Warmonger
- Rumourmonger
- Costamonger
This list is constantly changing, as new products are discovered by Economists and the decision over whether they are vended (variant: vent) or monged is made by Librarians.
