Personality
Calm and seemingly unflappable, Captain Unohana is a pillar of strength, for her division and the Gotei 13. She is caring, polite and much beloved by much of soul society (except for perhaps on person in particular). She is no respecter of persons and uses honorifics with everyone, even her subordinates in her division. She is calm under pressure and doesn't show distress, even in the face of traitors Aizen and Ichimaru. However for all her calm and serene outside disposition, she is one of the most intimidating of the Captains. Even when she is intimidating members of the 11th division for picking on her division, she is unerringly polite, using her polite mannerisms and wit to verbally knock them down. In a seeming mismatch with her mild personality, her specialty and one of her hobbies is kendo (swordfighting). Two more of her more seemingly in character hobbies are ikebana (flower arranging) and hiking up mountains, searching for medicinal herbs.
Powers and Abilities
Canonly, Captain Unohana is one of the most powerful captains in the Gotei 13. According to the Bleach Data books, her stats are one of the four highest and are as follows: Battle stats Power: 100 Defense: 80 Mobility: 70 Kidou/Reiatsu: 100 Wisdom: 100 Stamina: 90
She is extremely powerful, in her Kidou, as expected in the Leader of the 4th Division, the relief and healing division. In power and wisdom, her ranking is at the top as well and her stamina is on par and above many other captains. Her only weaknesses are defense and mobility, and these are still on par with others.
In the S1 Universe, her wisdom remains unchanged, however everything else takes a significant dive. Her power is cut in half and her Kidou in a third. Her stamina when using kidou is reduced by half and would drain her rather quickly. Her mobility and defense are cut in a fourth, still retaining her expert swordsmanship, but without the ability to flashstep effectively.
History
Captain Unohana Retsu is the Captain of the 4th division which is the medical relief and supply division of the Gotei 13. Not much is known intimately about her past in the manga, only that she is beloved by her division and most of Soul Society. She wears her hair in a braid down the front, rather than the back and wears a standard shinigami captain's uniform, with the obi tied in the front.
Her zanpakutou is called Minazuki which means literally: to purify the flesh. When sealed, Minazuki is only slightly longer than an ordinary katana. It resembles more of a nodachi than a Katana.. Instead of tying it to her obi, Unohana carries Minazuki over her shoulder by a rope strap. Several instances, her Lieutenant Kotetsu Isane has carried it for her. Minazuki's shikai is quite different as the entire sword transforms into a giant, flying, one-eyed manta-ray. It's main ability is to heal people in its stomach by swallowing them. When Unohana reseals Minazuki, it dissolves into green mist and reforms itself back into the sheath of her zanpakutou.
During the Soul Society arc, Unohana was the only person to see through Aizen's treachery to find the truth while still being under his illusion. It was she who confronted him after his attempted murder of Hinamori Momo and Hitsugaya Toushirou, along with her Lieutenant. It was she who saved their lives as Isane warned the rest of SS about Aizen's plan. She is also the bane of Zarakai Kenpachi's existence as she is the only person he seems to be afraid of and avoids at all cost. She finds it amusing and in my humble opinion gets great fun out of watching him run.
