Personality
Naruto, while passionate about the things he believes in, is also very naive and even though at present canon he has a firm grasp on the shinobi world, there's still a lot for him to learn. He's very loud and sometimes obnoxious but he also fights for what he believes in and would risk his life to save his friends. He is almost loyal to a default, as seen with Sasuke and his desire to bring his friend/rival back. Once he's set his mind to something, he's very determined to see it through, no matter the cost (ie. Sasuke). And while he may complain from time to time about the missions/jobs he's been given, he does his best to give it his all and make sure that they are completed.
Powers and Abilities
Through the use of chakra Naruto can perform a number of abilities, such as climbing trees by foot and walking on the surface of the water. But most notably is his ability to create complete clones of himself, through which he can learn when using them for training, and his signature attack the Rasengan.
History
12 to 13 years prior to the start of canon a demon named the Kyuubi attacked the hidden village of Konoha and in order to defeat it the Fourth Hokage sealed the demon inside of a baby boy in hopes that the village would then treat this child as their hero; one who sacrificed his life for the greater good of the village. However the village did not see it as so. Whether it was because they knew inside lived the demon, or that the Fourth Hokage died shortly after (as the jutsu he used is fatal) remains to be seen. For the next 12 years Naruto lived alone, shunned by the village save for a few that chose to look after him such as Umino Iruka, an Academy teacher and Chuunin level ninja, and the Third Hokage who came out of retirement after the Fourth had died to continue his reign over Konoha.
We then fast forward to the start of canon, 13 years later. Naruto in the beginning was a prankster and an all around troublemaker. Personally I think he acts out as he does to gain attention that he would otherwise not get due to his situation. Naruto has no friends that we see and he lives in an apartment by himself given to him by the Hokage. On the last day of the Academy (they don't say what age they enter, but I'm assuming maybe 8-10 yrs judging by flashbacks) Naruto ultimately fails his test and while everyone attains their hitai-ate (forehead protector) and watching as parents congratulate their children, Naruto sits alone on a swing and those that notice him neither care nor bother with him.
Later that day a fellow teacher, Mizuki, comes to Naruto and offers him a deal. If he steals a sacred, forbidden scroll from the Hokage he would ensure that Naruto graduates. Naive, Naruto sets out to do just that and does successfully steal the scroll and takes it to the spot Mizuki told him to meet at. While there, Naruto unrolls the seal and learns the forbidden jutsu inside. The Kage Bunshin, which would later become his signature ability. After Mizuki's arrival Iruka also shows up, telling Naruto that Mizuki just wants the scroll for himself, neither knowing Naruto has already learned the jutsu. Mizuki then tells Naruto why everyone in the village hates him so much, all the while Iruka screams for him to stop. Naruto is stunned and hurt. Mizuki even goes so far as to tell him that Iruka also hates him, because the Kyuubi killed his family, leaving him an orphan much the same way Naruto was. Iruka tells him it's not true, but at this point Naruto doesn't know what to believe. Seeing as Naruto isn't going to give up the scroll, Mizuki attacks, throwing a large shuriken at the boy. Much to both Naruto and Mizuki's surprise, Iruka throws himself in front of it, the shuriken striking him in the back. He tells Naruto that he doesn't hate him and he understands very much what Naruto is going through and he then tells Naruto to run away.
Doing so, a chase ensues and Iruka tricks Mizuki but Mizuki has the upper hand and attacks Iruka, throwing another shuriken at the young Chuunin. Unable to dodge it, he waits for it to strike, but it never came. Looking up he is surprised to see Naruto in front of him, much the same way Iruka had done for Naruto, the shuriken sticking out of his back. Naruto then uses the Kage Bunshin to attack Mizuki and take him down. Afterwards, Iruka gives Naruto his hitai-ate and congratulates him on graduating from the academy. Naruto now has his own hitai-ate and his now a fully blown Genin.
Now becoming a Genin puts him onto Team 7 along with Uchiha Sasuke, Haruno Sakura and their teacher Hatake Kakashi. Naruto, who has never had a real family, through many trials and tribulations, finds his place in Team 7.
