Cocky and often smug with a heavy pride and dedication towards the one person who matters most to him. Roxas. However in Sora he found the things that made him care for Roxas and feel like he had a heart. Even if they have occasional bickers.
He's often not too smart for his own good. He attempted to kidnap Kairi to lure Sora out so he could see him, which inevitably ended in his own demise. He relized that all he accomplished with that task was to help out the Organization and make Sora's battle more difficult. However he could be highly manipulative to get the information and what he wants. This proven in his attempt to be nice and on Larxine and Marluxia's side when the two planned on betraying the Organization. However in his manipulative he has a sense of justice that comes to light when he brins Larxine's end by Sora's hands. But in that Justice [for the Org] he can't carry out his mission to kill Roxas. But when Roxas loses his memory it gives Axel the fuel he needs to try and kill him although Roxas does spark a hint if guilt and loads of anger when he said "we're...best friends, right?" However, Axel has his own goals. While he may be best friends with Roxas, he would not give up his life to save him.

Canonly, the power of fire and the ability to open portals to different worlds. Now, the dwindling power of fire.

Axel is part of the Organization group known as Organization XIII [made up of thirteen members] where he sits at place number 8 from being the 8th person to join into the Org. Canonly he holds two weapons known as Charkrams that expel the power of fire giving him the nickname "Flurry of Dancing Flames". From that he can create walls of flames but natrually in the S1 Universe his powers will be limited to throwing small flames and sparks around.
He's shown a manipulative side when he "joins" forces with Marluxia and Larxine who are looking for overthrow and take over the Organization for themselves, and proving his worth to them, and to gain their trust, he kills another member of the Org, Vexen, when ordered to do so. After he attempts to ruin their plans by setting Namine free to tell Sora what they've done to his memories but this is ruined when Marluxia takes Namine hostage. Axel, being a heartless being, has no problem with simply going through her to get to Marluxia which is foiled when Sora appears.
One person, however, has been able to reach Axel's metaphorical heart. Roxas. The 13th member of the Org. Roxas had abanonded the Org and fled having most of his memories erased. Axel is ordered to kill him for running away but that's turned haywire when Roxas and Sora merg. Acting on his own Axel abucts Kairi in hopes that Sora will follow him and he'll be able to fight and get Roxas back. Saix,[another member] takes her away to the Organization though to milk her use from Sora's rage.
When Sora and Axel meet again, Axel tells Sora how the Org had been using him to gain hearts which was led by a town invasion of Heartless. He apologizes for his actions in kidnapping Kiari and ultimately aiding the Organization in their conquest to get Hearts and as an act of remorse he fights along side Sora in hopes to protect him only...to really protect Roxas.
The battle gets overwhelming and in one vain attempt Axel performs a suicidal act that ends up inevitably killing him. When Sora asks why he did it he simply said. "I wanted to see Roxas again..."
