Personality

More often than not, Tamaki is a very happy person who wants to live life to the fullest. He is extremely narcissistic, flaunting his good looks around at every possible opportunity. Everything he does reeks of pretentiousness - from his drawn out, eloquent speeches to his melodramatic reaction to even the slightest insult or criticism. While easily offended, he'll always forget about it as soon as he find another reason to bounce around like a rubber ball (just taller).

He is easily moved by the hardships of others, and will do anything in his power to help somebody, even if it will end up having a negative impact on him. In some cases, his pure, energetic niceness and over-the-top nature is a bit off-putting. However, Tamaki is just to endearing that even if people are wary of him at first, they have no choice but to succumb to his charm. He is optimistic to the point of naivete. He truly believes that there are no unbeatable odds, you can find a bright side to any situation, and true love really does conquer all.

As you might expect, Tamaki loves everyone, but he loves his friends the most of all. When he arrived in Japan, his grandmother forbade him to speak to or see his mother, but he still held no resentment towards her. He loves his mom and misses her immensely, but nothing will stop him from doing what he wants, and what he wants is to be happy. He has the occasional moment of angst, which is understandable, even for him, but this is rare and he doesn't want people to see it. After all, if Tamaki is upset, there's no hope for anyone, is there?

History

Tamaki is half-French and half-Japanese. His father had an affair with a woman on a trip to France and fell in love with her, and he divorced his legal wife when Tamaki was born. His mother, Tamaki's grandmother, is the head of the family, and she made Tamaki's father come back to Japan, leaving Tamaki's mother to take care of him alone. She soon became sick, and Tamaki was the one taking care of her. He spent most of his free time playing the piano for his mom, instead of going out to play with friends like most children.

When he was in middle school, Tamaki's rich family back in Japan offered his mother a large amount of money to hand custody of him over to them, as he was the only heir to the Suou family. To pay for medical expenses and a better life for her son, she agreed, and Tamaki went to Japan. His grandmother, who never liked him because he was the product of an affair, would not permit him to live in the main Suou house or have any contact with his mother. In spite of all this, Tamaki remained happy, and enrolled in Ouran Private Academy, where it did not take long for him to rise to the top of his class and become friends with everyone. In his first year of high school, he created the Host Club, which has helped all its members overcome their insecurities and find their true selves.
