Holmes is the subject of the 'biographies' M.D John H. Watson, his roommate and best friend, writes. The biographies follow his detective career as the 'only consulting detective in London' in the late Victorian era. A cocaine and morphine addict, Holmes' early life is speculated at often- he never sees his brother, Mycroft, and his parents appear to be dead, with no other relatives behind him, but he rarely if ever hints at a life before college. He faked death for a brief spell and went to Switzerland for 'The Great Hiatus'. I don't remember right now how long that lasted.
