Anko's childhood isn't covered very in-depth in the original story, but it can be assumed that she was the daughter of shinobi due to the fact that they didn't seem to have much of an influence in her life (which ultimately fated her towards bad decision-making as a youth).

Anko graduated from the ninja academy as a child of ten years old and was soon taken on as an apprentice by one of the infamous 'Legendary Three'; Orochimaru. During this time of her life she took to hero-worshiping her sensei (as many children would), and he displayed 'special interest' in her as well, which only seemed to fuel her undying loyalty. She was already an above-average Genin, so when Orochimaru began teaching her his own techniques (most which were marked as 'forbidden' within the village), she took to them rather quickly, eventually mastering them. It's assumed that because of her skills Orochimaru decided that she would be one of his 'chosen' for his newest experiment. He would soon place 'cursed seals' on ten children he had picked for different reasons throughout Konoha and wait to see what the result would be...

Out of nine other children, Anko was the only one to survive the seal. It was at this point, after being put through so much suffering with absolutely no explanation, she realized that her sensei was indeed not the man she thought he was. She'd been used as a guinea pig and nothing more. After recovering from being marked she automatically began rejecting Orochimaru's plans for her. Around that same time, however, Orochimaru was pretty much driven from the village after being caught red-handed in his wicked experimentations-- in the end deciding not to take his pupil with him and 'abandoning' her, though leaving her alive (which no one can really say why he decided to leave her be in the end).

With the support of those around her, Anko would begin trying to put all of the horrible events of the last two years behind her and focus on becoming a Chuunin. Though she continued using the techniques taught to her by Orochimaru, she'd still excel above most normal ninja and eventually pass the Chuunin exam at age 12.

The next 12 years are unwritten in her story-book, but it goes to say that Anko was doing her best to work hard and develop her own jutsu and 'ninja way', moving up in the ranks and eventually being given the title 'Tokubetsu Jounin'- or rather -'Special Jounin'. A rank not given freely to just anyone, this puts her into an elite crop of shinobi who have been able to perfect their skills beyond all others, create their own jutsu, and in lesser words signify that they belong to a group that is most relied upon at the top of the chain (other than the ANBU, a whole different cherry to be picked).

At age 24 she becomes a proctor for the latest Chuunin exams, the one which the ever-popular 'Rookie Nine' were attending. During the exams she made it clear just how sadistic her personality could be as she all but laughed at the children as they entered the 'Forest of Death' for their second exam period. Unfortunately, it was during this time which we find out that her ex-sensei Orochimaru has suddenly shown back up in his home village with evil intentions. When she finds out he's there in the second exam grounds with reasoning she's not sure of yet, she goes to confront him. For the first time in many, many years Anko is again confronted with the stigma of her past. Her cursed seal, which had been dormant all those years, suddenly comes to life as she attempts to extract information from her former sensei, as well as end his life. She was even willing to use one of his own techniques, a suicide jutsu, to get rid of him forever. But things don't quite work out as planned, and later she finds herself in the presence of the Sandaime attempting to come to terms with her guilt and frustration about all that happened.

Underneath her cold exterior, she really does love her village, and finds it hard to not blame herself for the deaths of all who became involved in Orochimaru's scheming during the exam. She did, however, uncover the reason behind Orochimaru's presence- his hunt for Uchiha Sasuke. Later, during the third stage of the exam, she would fight for Sasuke's withdraw but to no avail.

Anko is by no stretch a 'main character' in the Naruto series, actually completely background oriented. To know what she's been up to since the Chuunin exams is pretty much impossible.
