The Ballarat class destroyers were intended to replace the Daring class destroyers and supplement the Perth class destroyers. They were originally intended to be part of an Anglo-Australian project, however British participation ended with the Australian insistance that American weapons be used. The design borrows a lot from the British Type 42 destroyer.

The Ballarat class are general purpose destroyers, capable in anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and (with Seahawk helicopters) capable in anti-submarine warfare. The ships are somewhat limited by their lack of a thrown anti-submarine weapon like Ikara or VL-ASROC. They are good sea boats, even in the Southern Ocean.

The ships have seen action, with HMAS Lismore participating in shore bombardment operations in Operation Falconer, as well as maritime security duties in the Persian Gulf.

The first was commissioned in 1980, and the last in 1985. The ships of the class are as follows:
