Shoehorn was a quiet farming community, until gold was discovered in them thar hills. Now there was hostility between the miners and the farmers, which occasionally erupted in bloodshed. In addition, some of the meanest gunfighters in the region ran through Shoehorn on a regular basis, sometimes employed by Mason, a "rancher" who used his ranch as a front to smuggle in illegal Chinese labor, which he sold to the railroads. Rumor had it that Mason really ran Shoehorn. Needless to say, the sheriff sleeps with an eye open, and overlooks a few things from time to time, like when Mason's men cause trouble.
