Shoehorn was a quiet farming community, until gold was discovered in them thar hills. Now there is hostility between the miners and the farmers, which occasionally erupts in bloodshed. In addition, some of the meanest gunfighters in the region run through Shoehorn on a regular basis, and are sometimes employed by Mason, a "rancher" who uses his ranch as a front to smuggle in illegal Chinese laborers, which he sells to the railroads. Rumor has it that Mason really runs Shoehorn. Needless to say, the sheriff sleeps with an eye open, and overlooks a few things from time to time, like when Mason's men cause trouble. Or kill people in "self defense."
