Glavnoe Razvedyvatel'noe Upravlenie (an English transliteration of Гла́вное Разве́дывательное Управле́ние, Russian for Main Intelligence Directorate) or GRU (a transliteration of ГРУ) is a Russian intelligence agency comparable to American joint military and civilian intelligence agencies combined. A counterpoint and rival to the KGB, the GRU operates with a great deal of authority and autonomy. Unlike the KGB, which was split up and renamed in 1991, the GRU is still in operation. The directorate's full name is GRU GSh (GRU Generalnovo Shtaba (or GenShtaba), which is translated GRU of the General Staff).
