Sunnydale, California

Sunnydale is a fictional city in southern California, created for the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and referenced in the spinoff series Angel. It was founded in the 19th century by Richard Wilkins, who became the first mayor and, thanks to a pact with demons, continued to serve as mayor (perhaps intermittently) until his death in 1999.

Located about two hours northwest of Los Angeles, California, Sunnydale was built atop a Hellmouth, a place where interplanar boundaries are weakened and hell dimensions may be more easily accessed. As a result, the city was often a nexus of supernatural activity and attracted all manner of demons and vampires.

In May, 2003, Sunnydale was completely destroyed, along with the Hellmouth, in a battle between the Slayers (led by Buffy Summers) and the First Evil.
