The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is an intelligence agency of the United States Government. Its primary function is obtaining and analyzing information about foreign governments, corporations, and persons, and reporting such information to the branches of the Government. Its secondary function is propaganda or public relations, overt and covert information dissemination, both true and false, and influencing others to decide in favor of the United States Government. The third function of the CIA is as the hidden hand of the U.S. government, by engaging in covert operations at the direction of the President. This last function has caused the most controversy for the CIA, raising questions about the legality, morality, effectiveness, and wisdom of such operations.
Its headquarters are in the community of Langley, in Fairfax County, Virginia, a few miles Northwest from downtown Washington, D.C., along the Potomac River. The CIA is part of the American Intelligence Community, led by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI). The role and functions of the CIA are roughly equivalent to those of the United Kingdom's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and Israel's Mossad.

In TV Superheroes
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) within the TV Superheroes campaign differs from the real organization as depicted in the TV shows that define the game world, and as it has otherwise been used by the GM and players in crafting characters and stories.
Divisions
APO
Authorized Personnel Only (APO) is a completely covert black-ops division of the CIA. APO can be tasked with any of a wide variety of missions related to international criminals and criminal organizations, terrorists and terrorist organizations, and even corporate espionage when it suits the best interests of the United States. However, they are often the division of choice to deal with the acquisition or destruction of the rare and mysterious Rambaldi artifacts. This is primarily due to the fact that APO's best agent, Sydney Bristow (now retired), is directly involved in the prophecies of Milo Rambaldi, wherein she is known as "the Chosen One."

- 1979
- KGB agent Irina Derevko kills Bill Vaughn and several other CIA agents.
- 1981
- Irina Derevko (in her guise as Laura Bristow) fakes her own death. Her husband Jack Bristow is subsequently interrogated by the CIA.
- 1982
- Standardized tests containing embedded Project Christmas questions are administered throughout the United States.
- September 1999
- Following the murder of her fiancée, Sydney Bristow discovers the true nature of her employer, SD-6, and starts working for the CIA as a double agent.
- January 2001
- Joint international operations, guided by the CIA, shut down and capture all twelve SD cells, effectively destroying the Alliance of Twelve.
- May 2001
- Sydney Bristow is abducted and brainwashed by the Covenant. Over the next two years she would perform operations for the Covenant under the alias Julia Thorn. CIA believes her to be dead.
- September 2003
- Sydney Bristow escapes her captors and returns to the CIA, but she does not remember the events of the past two years.
- 2004
- APO is formed as a covert division of the CIA.
- May 2005
- Elena Derevko is killed in an APO operation against the Covenant, and with her the Covenant is destroyed, thwarting their plan to use a Rambaldi artifact and the world's tainted drinking water to touch off an apocalypse.
