The Field of Dreams
From Stmargarets
Somewhat like the movie, except this actually happened.
Foundations
Over the course of several years of fundraising, parading the field of dreams as their mission, SMES finally built this field in the summer of 2000, under the reign of Mark Campaign.
They began construction of the field on the west side of the upper school campus. Construction crews decided that water drainage might plague the field, and therefore built in a 10-15 degree slope to the field. This means that if you are sitting on one side of the field, you cannot see the other. Also, the ball will slowly roll from one side to another if placed in the center.
A snack bar was built to sell lots of gatorade at reasonable prices.
An addition was added to the far side of the field to house a large batting cage. It has a large security camera on it, the first of many security cameras popping up around campus.
Uses
Nearly all the sports at SMES use the field of dreams, which the students refer to as, 'The Football Field'. Football takes precedence in the fall, and soccer gets spring.
In the summer of 2007, a renovation project was commenced. The field was changed from a reasonably comfortable grass-and-dirt field, into a disturbingly squishy Astroturf affair. This was due to problems relating to the CIF championships of 2006, where it was decided that St. Margaret's field was not appropriate or something. Anyway, the actual field itself was shrunk, to make room for more lunch tables and bleachers. The bleachers, are, in a word, complete crap. The administration has said these bleachers will be temporary, although knowing the SMES administration, it is likely that they will be in place for many generations of Upper Scholars to enjoy.
