Hitchiker's Guide to Spira
From Spira
This wiki has maps and pictures of all hidden areas in Spira but is not a game Walktrough. For a detailed Walktrough see GAMEFAQ for FFX or GAMEFAQ for FFX2 This is a more detailed look at the world of Spira, written with Fan Fiction writers and other FFX or FFX2 fanatics in mind. People who write Fan Fiction for both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 often want to describe a place or someone from the game and can't find any pictures on the web. Now they can.

[edit] Economy
[edit] Currency
Spira currently uses Gil as it's official currency but evidence dug out in Bikanel Desert recently (FFX2) indicates it may have used gold coins in the past. For notation we Will use G for Gil amounts.
[edit] Commerce
People in Spira can be seen weaving (Besaid), working on shops, bars and travel agencies, playing Blitzball, raising Chocobos, driving boats and shoopufs and performing in a variety of entertainment shows. One assumes some Spira residents fish and grow produce to supply their fellow Spirans with foodstuffs and that there should be a market of some sorts in every city / village.
[edit] Geography
The world of Spira is composed mostly of water, having only one large continent that spans from Spira's South Pole which can be seen from the distance in Besaidadd img, until well above Spira's Equator.
[edit] Climate
Spira's climate resembles the climate of the South Pacific on Earth on the Southern part of the continent. The climate gets colder as we approach Guadosalam, further North, as we can see by the clothing worn by the Guado and Bevelle natives. Macalania seems to be situated in high altitude, as vast icy areas can be seen on the road to Macalania temple, ice that is not present in it's neighboring city Bevelle. With the exception of the snowy high mountain trails of Mt. Gagazet, the Northern tip of the continent seems to have a temperate or mildly warm weather since we can see lighter clothing being worn by Yunalesca, Maechem and other Zanarkand natives and by the travel agency patrons on the Calm Lands
[edit] Flora / Fauna
Spira has it's own unique fauna, composed mainly of fiends, which are hostile monsters that attack any passerby. Other animals that can be seen in Spira are small monkeys, dogs, cats, [Fantasy bestiary|chocobos and shoopuf]. All plants species in Spira resemble the plants on Earth with three notable exceptions: The magic woods of Macalania Forest, the moon lilies of the Moonflow and the plant fiend, plant like monsters such as the Ochu
[edit] Cultural aspects
From Wikipedia: Many elements of Final Fantasy X are drawn from Japanese culture and folklore. The names of most of the main cast are drawn from either Okinawan or Ainu words ("Yuna" meaning "blossom" in the former and "Wakka" "water" in the latter).. The world of Spira itself is ..modeled on southeast Asia, most notably with respect to its vegetation, topography, and architecture
[edit] Population
[edit] Races / Ethnic Groups
Most intelligent beings in Spira belong to one of the 5 Humanoid races that inhabit the planet. The exception are the Cactuars which are intelligent, talking cacti that can even move around Spira during certain phases of their life stages. The Catcuar have been the protectors of Bikanel Desert for many generations.
Humanoids Humanoids in Spira belong to one of the following 5 sentient races: Ronso, Guado, Hypello, Al Bhed and Humans. Among Spira's regular humans there are several small ethnic subgroups that share some distinctive clothing and/or physical traits.
Cactuar
The cactuar are intelligent, talking cacti that appear in the games Final Fantasy X and its sequel, Final Fantasy X-2. They go through several life stages, including one where they are small mobile cacti.
[edit] Magical Beings
In Spira we have the regular, run of the mill, humanoid person or animal that can be killed or die of natural causes, but we also have several "magical" classes of beings. There are 2 types of immortal beings that look, move and talk like an humanoid species yet are not alive and can not die: The Unsent and the w:Fayth. All 5 humanoid races when deceased can become either one, depending on how much skill and help they get. There are also 2 classes of magical fauna in Spira: the helpful Aeons and the aggressive Fiends
[edit] Spira's History
[edit] Calendar
For clarity sake we will divide Spira's calendar in 2 periods: Before and After the events on first game of the series (FFX) take place, abbreviated as BG and AG respectively. Following this notation the game FFX2 takes place in year 2 AG and the Bevelle / Zanarkand war takes place in year 1,000 BG.
[edit] Significant Events
One thousand years before the events of Final Fantasy take place the world of Spira was much different than what we see on the game. Zanarkand, now a dead city was a vibrant metropolis with many skyscrapers and had a thriving civilization of mages, lead by High Summoner Yu Yevon. Bevelle was also a large, vibrant city. It's leaders were not preoccupied with the Yevon Church and were actually enemies of Yevon and Zanarkand. But a war started between Zanarkand and Bevelle and Sin was born of an attempt by Zanarkand to spare it's city. Sin proceeded to destroy all living things it saw on it's path.. Yu Yevon's Daughter Yunalesca defeated Sin 1,000 years ago and brought some temporary peace to Spira, in what was called "The First Calm".
After Yunalesca, the title of High Summoner was bestowed on Summoners that were sucessful in defeating Sin. There are currently only 6 High Summoners known to have defeated Sin after the First Calm: Summoner Gandof defeated Sin 400 years ago (400 BG) becoming the first High Summoner since Yunalesca. 230 years ago (230 BG) Summoner Ohalland defeated Sin. Lady Yocum defeated Sin approximately 100 years ago (100 BG) and Lord Braska, Yuna's father, defeated Sin 10 years before the events of FFX took place (10 BG). Yuna defeated Sin during FFX (0 AG) and defeated Vegnagun two years later, during FFX2 (year 2 AG)

[edit] Dream City
In addition to the ruined cities, Spira also has Dream Zanarkand, Tidus home town, which is shown in the game as a very modern city, with little or no magic.
[edit] City Ruins
After 1,000 years of Sin's attacks, predictably, the world of Spira has several ruins of old cities and buildings. Those are the "Lost Cities of Spira":
- Zanarkand Ruins - A city dead for 1,000 years, this is not the same city as Tidus' home town.
- Moonflow River - Submerged City Ruins

[edit] Temples
Each temple has a distinctive Architectural style, which is not very similar to Zanarkand's. This can be easily explained for the Temples that are part of a Summoner's pilgrimage: They were all built after Zanarkand fell, by the Yevon Church.

[edit] Architecture
A lot of places in Spira have ruins showing the distinctive architetural styel thattall round towers with pointed cones, with a band of decorative runes around each cone. The tower colors resemble terracotta and the decorations are usually blue/green. Windows tend to be circular. The current cities of Spira were probably built after the war and have a very different style form Zanarkand's
