Background Story

Evan Baker grew up on a self-sufficient farm in the Oregon desert. His parents were survivalists, sincerely convinced that the collapse of civilization was imminent. Evan learned to build his own shelter, grow his own food, raise (or hunt) and butcher his own meat; he learned to make do or do without in every possible way. Life under these primitive conditions was a constant challenge and it shaped him from an early age. He's a very self-directed, capable individual who is always searching for new challenges, always testing himself.

Evan enjoyed the solitude and even the harshness of the desert environment, and spent a lot of his free time exploring it. He explored caves, climbed rocks and even tried various American Indian spirit quests in the emptiness. He was an indifferent student, bored by most of what the schools had to teach him, though he read voraciously and independently, learning a great deal on his own. He was active in a variety of sports in school. He graduated high school and went to college, where he studied psychology and history, and participated in numerous athletic programs, including fencing and martial arts.

During and after college he worked as a bouncer in clubs and bars, putting his martial arts training to use and broadening his experience. He also joined the military and spent several years in the army as military policeman, dealing with military prisoners and prisoners of war. The years he spent dealing with prisoners has given him a great deal of close combat experience and sharpened his combat skills considerably. Evan recently mustered out but hasn't decided what he wants to do next, though he's toying with the idea of law enforcement.

Evan's parents are still alive, and still married. He has two sisters, one older and one younger. He's not close to his sisters, both of whom are married with their own families now. He sees his parents occasionally, but not often.

When the game begins, Evan is in the Oregon desert--and somewhat disoriented--having teleported there instinctively when his power manifested.

Personality

Evan Baker is extremely self-sufficient. He is frequently amused by the antics of his fellow human beings, finding them by turns amusing and frustrating. He has no patience with stupidity or sloth, but will move heaven and earth for those he finds worthwhile--intelligent, trustworthy, reliable. He loves nothing so much as a challenge, be it physical or mental. A day without risk (and rewards) is like a day without sunshine. Working as a bouncer, joining the military, working as a guard in the military prisons--Evan chose all of these occupations for the challenges they presented, and the opportunity to learn from them.

When the game starts, Evan is at loose ends. He's not sure what he wants to do with the rest of his life, but he knows that he wants to continue testing himself. The challenge of facing superhuman foes will give him a focus unlike anything he's ever faced before. He'll love it, and the more difficult the challenge, the more he'll relish it.

Appearance

Evan is of average height, a bit stocky, very fit but not "ripped." Short brown hair and blue eyes.

Powers

Evan is a teleporter. He can teleport himself and up to 2,500 pounds of cargo and/or passengers to any point he's familiar with within 20,000 miles (essentially anywhere short of the moon). In addition, he can teleport others (or inanimate objects up to 2,500 pounds) in the same way without going along for the ride. Anything within about 1,000 feet he can do almost instantly. Greater distances require a full turn of concentration.

Evan can teleport into or out of moving vehicles (or to areas on earth which are moving at different relative velocities or even in the opposite direction), but this requires conscious balancing of the vectors involved--one reason long distance teleportation requires a full turn. As a side effect of Evan's ability, he can imbue objects around him with a pulse of kinetic energy, turning small objects into fast-moving projectiles (a Blast power) or "throwing" larger objects (Telekinesis, but with the limitation that he can only provide an initial push).

I envision his initial use of his power as instinctual, an escape from a threat. It will take him some time to learn to make long distance jumps, or jumps into or out of moving vehicles, without some bumps along the way. Learning to "fling" others will also take some time.
