Pre-Deluge history and biography
Konstantin was born on March 8, 1911 in the city of Voronezh, Russia. He was the third of four children born to Igor and Galina Belov and his childhood was fairly average by the standards of the time. His eldest brother, Gennadi, was killed during the Russian Civil War and this prompted Konstantin to enter into the field of medicine. He was among the first students to be taught at the newly formed Kursk State Medical Institute (now University).
It was during his time there that he witnessed something that would change his life forever. He was on his way to speak with a professor when he spotted said professor down a dark street fighting another person with a sword. His professor won and beheaded his opponent which unleashed a lightning storm of sorts and shocked Konstantin to the core. A man pulled him aside just as things were settling and explained to him what he had just seen – an Immortal taking another Immortal’s Quickening. The man explained that he belonged to the Watchers, a group of men and women charged with the job to chronicle the lives of Immortals. Konstantin was intrigued and agreed to join the group.
He graduated at the top of his class at the Moscow Watchers Academy and joined their research division to start with. In 1940 Konstantin received his first official assignment – a man named Ivan Alexeivich Nikolaev. War had already broken out in Europe and so when Ivan joined the army, Konstantin did as well. Utilizing his medical degree he became a medic in the same division ‘Colonel Mikhailov’ was in. The two had contact from time to time, but that was to be expected given the situation.
Tragedy struck only a few months into the Soviet Unions participation in the war when Ivan’s teacher was killed by a piece of shrapnel. Konstantin did what came naturally to him and comforted the Immortal man; befriending him and doing his best to keep him from doing something stupid because of his feelings of guilt. It flew in the face of his basic oath as a Watcher, but he couldn’t help it. He was a doctor first, and he had also come to respect and like his assignment a great deal.
By the end of summer 1942, Konstantin found himself in the city of Stalingrad. The war up to that point had been a nightmare, but he was about to experience a whole new level of hell. By that time, Konstantin realized he was in love with his assignment. He pursued a physical relationship with Ivan despite the fact that he knew the Immortal man did not love him. When you were facing death pretty much every second of every day you took comfort and companionship where you could get it. It was an offense that could very well have gotten him shot by the higher-ups in the Soviet Union’s branch of the Watchers but he didn’t care. It was wartime and everyone had bigger things to worry about. He’d cross the bridge of the consequences from the relationship when and if he made it to the end of the war.
As it turned out, Konstantin didn’t make it to the end of the war. He died in the line of duty in Stalingrad in early January of 1943, not too long before the battle there ended.
Post-Deluge events
His death in Stalingrad should have been the end of the story for Konstantin, but it would seem Fate had other plans. When the Deluge swept across Earth sixty three years later, Konstantin found himself alive once more, waking up almost as if from a nights sleep. He was no longer in Stalingrad, or Russia for that matter, and everywhere around him there were people screaming and crying out in distress. The doctor in him kicked into gear and he put aside the questions of how he was still alive in favor of attempting to help the people around him. After helping the people he could he tested the theory that he had become immortal by cutting his finger, when it didn’t heal he knew something else must be at work. It is a question he has yet to find an answer to.
He was located and identified by another Watcher who happened to be in the area at the time (and whose Immortal assignment ended up vanishing in the Deluge) and he brought Konstantin to the regional headquarters for the Watchers in the South Eastern United States – Atlanta.
For some reason, the people in charge there didn’t seem too terribly shocked by his revival. Then again, they did follow around people that lived forever and chopped each-other’s heads off for a living. Things were also a bit chaotic as they tried to cope with the disappearances (or worse) of various field agents, as well as the occasional Immortal or two, so he suspected his mystery was a little low on the list.
Konstantin was paired up with a young Watcher named Marty Jacobs who was supposed to help him acclimate. As it would turn out, Marty had been raised part of his life by an Immortal before he was recruited to the organization, Because of that, he had made a point to study other Watchers who had had contact with Immortals and he knew of Konstantin. The two became fast friends.
Things went well for a week or two, Konstantin read up on as much information as he could in addition to all the ‘mini history lessons’ he would receive from Marty. By then, however, more and more people within the organization (and the world at large as well) were becoming sick and even dying from some strange illness. Konstantin helped as many as he could, but he’d never seen anything like it and more often than not he could do little more than make someone comfortable as they passed. Even Marty ended up contracting the illness, albeit much later than most of the others. Konstantin stayed awake for three days straight trying to help his new friend, but it was no use. He died, just like the rest of them, and Konstantin found himself alone in a strange city and time.
He stuck around Atlanta for a while since he knew the city at least a little bit, but soon he felt the need to move on and try to find others. He has entertained ideas of possibly searching out Ivan, but he isn’t too sure about that. From what he’s read, Ivan finally found peace, and love, after the war and he doesn’t want to intrude upon that in any way. For now, he is still trying to come to grips with his new life in this new world.
Character trivia and knowledge
Konstantin speaks with a very noticeable Russian accent.
Since he was (for all intents and purposes) displaced in time, Konstantin has a major gap in his knowledge of the world. Anything from 1943 onward is all new to him and he can be a bit like a kid in a candy shop now with some things because of that.
Konstantin's nature
Konstantin (Kostya to good friends) is a fairly average and unremarkable guy. He’s easy to get along with, though he can be stubborn at times, especially when confronted with someone who goes against what he feels is best for them. He’s also loyal to a fault, something his father said would get him killed one day (which it somewhat did).
As a doctor, he has a good beside manner, but, can be harsh if needed. He keeps his cool under pressure, and can step up and take charge if the situation warrants.
As a Watcher he follows the basic creed of ‘Watch and Record, but never interfere’ for the most part – he will not reveal the organization, or that he knows what an Immortal is. He would, however, befriend an Immortal (though he wouldn’t aide them in a challenge).
