Pre-Deluge history and biography
Before the Deluge and Fate's Handmaiden, Jenifer Laurents was, for all intents and purposes, your average twelve-year-old girl. She was mercurial, going from happy to moody at the drop of a hat. Jenifer had her favorite actors and boy bands, loved blue nail polish and when asked, would giggle about wanting her first kiss.
Appearances can be deceiving. Beneath the teenage façade, there was more to Jenifer than met the eye. Jenifer was born Umpisa Narag nearly three hundred years ago in the Phillipines. While playing with her brothers and sisters, Umpisa fell and hit her head on a rock. She died instantly, only to awaken later much to the shock and horror of her family.
Chased out of her village, Umpisa soon managed to stow away on a boat leaving the Phillipines. She wandered for many years, eeking out survival by begging or performing menial tasks, and running away in fear when she was hit with the sudden, loud buzzing presence in her mind. It was nearly ten years before Umpisa was found by another Immortal, told what she was, and taught to defend herself and fight with a sword.
Like all long-lived Immortals, Umpisa turned into a chameleon. She learned to change her name, her behavior, how to make it into a foster family, how to survive on the streets and when it was time to disappear. She doesn't fight much, having learned that it is easier to simply escape and disappear rather than face down a bigger and stronger opponent. However, when she does fight, she uses her small size and perceived weakness to her advantage.
Jenifer Laurents was living with her "grandmother," a woman named June who'd discovered Jenifer's secret nearly sixty years ago when they were both children. Though Jenifer disappeared from June's life during their childhood, their paths crossed again shortly after a young twenty-something June lost both her husband and child in a car wreck. June took in Jenifer and creaeted a life for them both, first as sisters, then as mother and daughter, and finally as grandmother and granddaughter, relocating and moving as Jenifer's ever unchanging face dictated.
Though June survived the Deluge, she didn't outlive Fate's Handmaiden. Jenifer buried her best friend and grandmother, and decided to put as much distance between the last place she called home and herself in the days of chaos following. She had no direction, no destination in mind, just feeling the Immortal wanderlust strike again.
Post-Deluge events
During her sojourn, Jenifer discovered Marcus, thirteen months old, nearly starving and dehydrated in the apartment where his mother, father and three siblings died. Her experience with children was limited, but Jenifer couldn't leave the baby to die. There had been a time when she would have; being Immortal taught her some hard facts about life and death. But with so few people left in the world, even a sick baby deserved a fighting chance.
Marcus was a fighter and with food and water, he began to recover. Later, Jenifer found Elise, four years old and as skittish as a colt, surviving out of trash cans and whatever the child could scrounge. Two children made travel slow, and after an encounter with a pervert who saw three potential victims (whom Jenifer left cleanly beheaded), she knew she'd have to find a better way for the three of them to survive.
They stopped at a farm house in Tennessee that had a gas powered generator. There Jenifer began to make plans for the winter, and for the hope of finding other survivors and someone to take in two orphans.
Character trivia and knowledge
Umpisa/Jenifer comes with two NPC characters:
Marcus: Thirteen months old, black, male infant. Marcus is a very easy going, playful child, who has just begun to smile again. Jenifer suspects that the near starvation and dehydration pushed his development back a bit and he is now playing catch up. He's extremely attached to Jenifer and Elise, and the only time he truly cries or panics is when neither of the the two girls is within his line of sight.
Elise: Four years old, white, female, red hair, blue eyes. Elise didn't talk at all when Jenifer found her, now she will whisper in Jenifer's ear and will sing to Marcus. Elise is extremely attached to Jenifer and extremely wary of strangers, to the point of becoming feral if provoked. She is also protective of Marcus.
