Pre-Deluge history and biography
Marie Brown was born in California to parents who divorced less than a year after her birth. The daughter of a single mother, she relied upon her mother and her grandparents (who lived nearby) for emotional support. Marie grew up as a shy, quiet child who prefered her books to dealing with people. Her shyness gradually eroded as she went through college and working life, and she followed her mother into working for the State of California. Her love of computers and of learning new things drew her into a job where her computer skills were in much use, and it didn't bother her that she had to move away from her family to live in Blue Bay Harbor, on the coast of California.
Post-Deluge events
When the Deluge hit, Marie was taking a bus. Fortunately, the bus was stopped; she dreaded what would have happened if it had been going full speed, as half the passengers disappeared , along with the bus driver. Marie made a quick decision to visit her mother (her grandparents being long dead), and found her to still be alive. When Fate's Handmaiden struck her mother, and with half of Blue Bay Harbor (including the office where she worked) underwater, she elected to go back home, taking her bicycle and bicycle trailer on one of the few Amtrak routes still operating.
Finding the state in no need of her services, she decided to stay on a week or two to see her mom. Her mother soon was affected by Fate's Handmaiden, and Marie saw that she was cremated. Packing one or two of her mom's favorite books, she headed back to Blue Bay, in hopes that her apartment was still there.
Luckily it was, and so Marie started packing up to move temporarily to her mom's place (after all, she was out of a job and Blue Bay Harbor seemed to be falling into the water). She packed the necessities (her laptop, toiletries, books, some clothes, shoes, and gadgets), and headed to her hometown. Finding that city as nearly as deserted, and not willing to live life as a hermit, she started getting ready for a long trip. Into her trailer went a sleeping bag and batteries (raided from the nearby Target), her chargers, plenty of notepaper, pencils and pens, her laptop, clothes, and a few books, including two of sentimental value.
She then set off across America, using the freeway system and trying to find her way east....
Character trivia and knowledge
Marie's nature
Marie is about 5'3" tall, with mousy brown hair and green eyes. A quiet woman, she's often mistaken for someone a decade younger than she is, much to her annoyance. This impression is helped by the fact that she missed learning some social graces when she was younger.
She loves books and knowledge; in fact, she's so eager to impart her knowledge, that she will often go into ten-minute lectures on a subject if not stopped. She thinks she knows more than she does. She'd easily win any game of Trivial Pursuit. While definitely not a leader herself, she works well in a support role, though she can perform in a leadership role if she needs to.
During the Deluge, Marie developed a minor pyrokinetic power. She can light fires, though she does it by imagining the molecules agitating. She must concentrate on this and therefore can't do it while under stress or in a fight. Nor can she set something very large on fire; she believes that she can't agitate enough molecules to affect something bigger than her.
