Notes when West is Dealer:
  1. P0, P1: 13 HCP, one 5-card suit, 9 cards in his two longest suits.
  2. P11, P1: With 12 HCP, a 5-card diamond suit, and 9 cards in his two longest suits, North would have bid 1.
  3. P13, P19: East has 11 HCP but no 5+ card suit, so cannot bid, for instance, 1♠.
  4. P2: With just 4 HCP and no 6+ card suit, South can pass partner's double. If East had not bid, South would have bid 1NT.
  5. P7: West can bid his other 4+ card suit at the 2-level.
  6. P33: Given that the opposition has bid spades and hearts, this double asks South to bid his better minor.
  7. P16: East has 11 HCP and good 4-card support for West's second suit.
  8. South needs to show club support.
  9. West makes a minimum reply to the Simplex 2NT convention.
  10. North likes clubs.

Notes when South is Dealer:
  1. P14
  2. P0, P1: 12 HCP, five-card diamond suit and nine cards in his longest two suits.
  3. P8, P5: 11 HCP and no 5+ card suit.
  4. P2. South has 4 HCP and no 6+ card suit. He must pass. If North has a 4+ card spade or club suit, either of which will excite South, he will say so on the next round.
  5. P9: 2♣ in response to a 1NT opening or overcall is Redshift. Whatever East replies, West will show his good heart suit on the next round.
  6. P33: North wanted to bid a natural 2♣ himself.
  7. P9: East responds to Redshift with his cheaper 3+ card suit.
  8. South shows his support for North's clubs.
  9. West is prepared to bid at the 3-level to show his 5-card heart suit and 13 HCP. (Note that E-W have not yet found their 4-4 spade fit.)
