  4. In response to 3 of a suit, 3 of a new suit shows a 4+ card suit and 5-13 points. He has club support, but a bid of 4♣ would deprive the pair of the opportunity of a 3NT contract.
  5. East should not bid 3NT unless he has all unbid suits stopped. Instead he bids his other 4+ card suit, as cheaply as possible, showing 17-19 HCP.
  6. West takes the view that slam is unlikely because East has denied a heart stopper. So he shows his club support.

  1. P14: As a test of Simplex's dealer-independence, we examine the bidding when the dealer is South instead of North.
  2. P8: 12 HCP and no 5+ card suit.
  3. P8: No 5+ card suit but only 8 HCP.
  4. P18, P22: 17 HCP and the cheaper of the two 5-card suits.
  5. With only 3 HCP and a 5-card suit, you are not strong enough to open or respond, so pass.
  6. Opposite a 3-level suit bid, the 1NT opener now bids his cheapest 4+ card suit.
  7. It is now clear to both East and West that the hearts are unstopped, so East bids past 3NT by showing another 4+ card suit.
  8. West ends the auction by showing his support for East's original suit.
