Notes when South is Dealer:
  1. P0, P1: 5-card suit, 15 HCP, 9 cards in two longest suits.
  2. P4, P1, P3: 5-card suit but only 6 HCP.
  3. P10: 3-card heart support and 8 HCP.
  4. P8, P11: With his 11 HCP and 4-3-3-3 shape, East wanted to bid 1NT, but North's bid has just taken this bid away from him. So he doubles.
  5. P12: North has made a limit raise and South has just the five hearts promised by his opening bid. Game is not on, so he passes.
  6. West now gets his chance to bid his 5-card suit.
  7. P11: North has bid the full extent of his hand already.
  8. As has East. He is minimum for his double.
  9. South takes his chances, based on his high point count (15 HCP) relative to the 8-16 HCP range his opening bid implied. This is the optimum contract, because 3♥ by N-S goes off one, whereas 2♠ by E-W makes.

Notes when East is Dealer:
  1. P14: As a test of Simplex's dealer-independence, we examine the bidding when the dealer is East instead of South.
  2. P8: 11 HCP, no 5+ card suit.
  3. P11: South wanted to bid 1♥, but East's bid has taken that away.
  4. P2: West cannot immediately bid a 5-card suit at the 2-level, so he employs one of the few gadgets in Simplex: 3-card Stayman. West will rebid 2♠ on the next round, if the bid is still available.
  5. P11: North was planning to bid 2♣ himself — his cheaper 3+ card minor — so doubles instead.
  6. East bids his cheapest 3+ card suit in response to the 2♣ gadget.
  7. South bids his 5-card suit.
  8. West makes the planned 2♠ bid.
  9. It is up to North whether he passes or shows support for South's hearts.
