Onryō

An onryō is a type of traditional Japanese ghost who returns to the world of the living for vengeance. Male onryō are not unheard of, but most are female ghosts who suffered at the hands of men (especially lovers) when they were alive. Their suffering creates a powerful and vengeful spirit when they die. Sadako Yamamura is an onryō.
