Mastigos, Tremere Lich, Former Guardian

When the Mortivora Cult was discovered, the corruption within Chicago's Guardians of the Veil was brought to the stark light of justice. As the Consilium hunted down the Guardians that were involved in the eugenics experiments, the Abyssal cults and the other dark, left-handed practices, many of the worst Guardians slipped into their Labyrinths and vanished. Among these was Yangtzu, the so-called "Demon-King". A master of goetia, he sought out the power and immortality of the Tremere Liches, and when the time came for him to stand trial for his heinous acts, he all but vanished.

It would be several years before he would re-appear in Chicago's Chinatown, possessed of wealth and power so great that he's turned Chinatown's Occult Underground into his own personal fiefdom - a clearing house to feed his hunger for wealth, power and souls. He rules his empire - both the dark, occult side and the ruthless criminal enterprises - with ruthless efficiency, hounding his foes with demons drawn from their worst fears, undead assassins and the destruction of their very souls. Still, he is not all powerful, and the groups that once lived in harmony in Chinatown now work as secret societies, each working to check his power and keep him from complete dominance.

Yangtzu appears as a wiry, dusky-skinned little man with very narrow, squinty eyes. He has long, thick glossy black hair that he usually wears tied back and his explorations of the depths of the Astral Realms have tainted his body somewhat, leaving two small horns on his head - just above his hairline and barely noticable.

This Cult had its origins with a young Guardian whose name has been completely erased from reality by means of powerful magic. During its rise, the corruption and decay of the Guardians of the Veil in Chicago was still unknown to the consilium at large, but the Mortivora quickly began to act openly, and even began to recruit like-minded members from the other Orders, until a small group of uncorrupted Guardians reported their true intent to the Assembly: to seize control of Chicago's Awakened population, and begin a systematic eugenics program on the city's Sleepers.

The Assembly acted quickly to dismantle the cult, and in so doing discovered the rotten heart of the Guardians of the Veil, which led to a purging crusade that lasted throughout most of the 1950s. By the end of the so-called "Sorcerer's Crusade", the Guardians were all but destroyed, save a handful of loyal mages who had been trying to fight the corruption from the inside. Its leader killed, his very identity erased from history by powerful magics, the Mortivora Cult was broken and scattered. Only a handful of its members remain, allowed to pursue their dark Legacy only because the Assembly doesn't see them as a threat and continues to find their extensive geneologies of proximi families useful from time to time.
