[edit] History
Jasmine always wanted more. As a child, she saw things that her friends had and grew jealous, begging her mother to get her whatever was the latest fad so she could be part of the in-crowd. But, her mother often could not do so; she was working two jobs, Jasmine’s father was long gone, and money was always tight. So, Jasmine’s envy of her fellows grew. Despite her family’s relatively tight funds, she was finally able to break into the ‘popular’ crowd in high school but even after that, she wanted more. And, on the night before she left for college, she got what she wanted.
While walking through downtown Chicago with a group of friends for a last hurrah before they all left town, Jasmine spotted a drop-dead gorgeous dress in a boutique. Although she knew she could never afford it, she went inside and tried it on. As she looked at herself in the mirror, she heard a man whisper “I can give you things far greater than that. Just come with me…” She looked about, seeing no one; then, a hand reached through the mirror, grabbed her tightly by the wrist, and pulled her through the Hedge.
Jasmine remembers little about her time in Arcadia. Occasionally, snippets of her lying in her Keeper’s lap, surrounded by treasures the likes of which have never been seen cross her mind; so, too, do memories of running on all fours in abject terror as hounds-who-were-once-men chased her through a dark forest. It was on one of these hunts that Jasmine returned to herself; cornered by one of the ‘hounds’, she pleaded and begged with him, managing to stir enough compassion that he too regained his human intellect. The pair quickly made their way through the Hedge, their Keeper’s hounds hot on their heels.
