Appearance
Mei is... a small person. Short, small build, skinny, and usually wearing childish clothes that make her look even smaller (between sweaters that are too large for her, kitty-eared hats, shorts with stockings, smiley earrings, you name it). Although she was born in Hong Kong, she has some level of mixed blood - mostly Japanese, something her family would rather not mention, though for the most part can't hide, as the girl's features are more reminiscent of Japan than HK.
Her hair length... varies. Most often it's at shoulder length, but she's known to let it grow or cut it short at random intervals (it helps that her hair grows surprisingly fast). She also tends to dye it a chocolate brown shade (black is BORING).

Personality
Extroverted, spontaneous, friendly, talkative. Xiao Mei is the type of person that can get along with anyone, provided they're not annoyed to the point of pondering stabbing her with sharp pointy objects within five minutes of meeting her. She's a bit of a geek and tends to talk too much, doesn't take a hint, and will keep bothering you until she gets what she wants - which tends to drive some people away. ...Well, most people.
She tends to do and say things without thinking, which often results in her putting her foot in her mouth, and randomly running into objects, falling off chairs, tripping, running into people, dropping things, and a variety of other embarrassing things.
If you do manage to stay around her for more than five minutes, though, you have yourself a very generous friend. Mei LOVES giving out things, be it ice cream cones or expensive gifts. Expect said gifts to be completely geeky, though - from anime DVD collections to videogaming consoles. And occasionally computer parts, if she thinks your computer sucks.
Academically, she is half a disaster, half a genius. Mei performs exceptionally well in Math, Art and Science, and exceptionally horribly in everything else. This rather weird combination has kept her average rather... well, average.
She resents her family a bit, but tries to hide it. When talking about her sisters, though, she'll easily get bitchy and pouty.
History
Born the third of five sisters to a Hong Kong businessman and his wife, Xiao Mei Ming was a little... different from the rest of the family, and it showed since her early childhood. Her mother, a musician, personally instructed the girls in music - but Mei liked drawing more than playing instruments. The girls all excelled in house chores, had flawless handwriting, good manners - except for her, who was a veritable disaster with anything house-related, had terrible handwriting, and had terrible manners.
And if that wasn't enough, she didn't even look very much like her sisters - which for a good ten years had her father suspecting her mother of adultery, and resulted in Mei not being very liked by either parent. DNA testing done when she was 10, though, did prove (much to the father's dismay) that she was indeed his daughter. Good for the mother, bad for Mei, who got constantly scolded for not acting anything like her sisters.
Being that she was rather a nuisance to the family, the parents had no objections to sending her to study abroad - AWAY from them = A+! - and off to SH she went. Because of her... erm, academic uniqueness - excelling at anything related to math and science, and doing horribly at most everything else - she did manage to get in with a decent score (parents' influence and money certainly helped, however).
