Appearance
Markus is handsome in a sharp way, with a pale complexion, spade-shaped nose and green, almost yellow eyes, one of which is always opened a bit more than the other. He's on the short side for an Austrian man, something he's extremely touchy about, and has a build between average and thin, very little of him being muscled. With a short, dark-brown mop of hair that refuses to behave, he's tried, Markus looks intense/creepy, depending on whether you like him or not. He dresses extremely well, happily spending Harold Arrowny's money on suits his daughter will never see him out of again.
History
Born to Polish parents living in Rzeszaw in the 70s, Markus was moved to Salzburg, Austria, soon after his first birthday. His father, having just been offered a higher paying job, felt Austria would be a better place for his children to grow up, ignoring his wife's complaints about the separation from family. To this day, Markus has never met anyone he is related to outside of his immediate family, and places little importance on familial bonds as a consequence.
The Kraulis family remained firmly seated among the middle class until Markus graduated from high school, at which point his father stumbled into a series of promotions that enabled his boys to move onto college. Markus hurried to apply, barely making the cut into a small Austrian university. After receiving a bachelors of science in Physics, he transferred to a far more prestigious school for post-graduate work, where he worked as a TA. In his time at the University of Salzburg, Markus learned that he had an aptitude for teaching and began working on a masters in that field. Also, while working towards a teaching degree, Markus met the woman who would become his first wife, Ada Harlowe. The pair lasted for a little over a year and Markus refers to fondly her as "his mistake" to this day. They separated only days after she declared that she wanted a baby and he replied that he wouldn't mind a cat.
Once settled in Berlin for his first teaching job, math instructor at a local high school, Markus met his second wife, Eve Somoff. An impossibly good-natured woman, he wondered if the divorce with Ada had been a fluke and plunged headlong into his second marriage. Two years into the match, however, Markus began to realize that everything he had once found charming in Eve was, in fact, incredibly annoying. He wandered in and out of affairs for over a year, until he was helplessly captivated by a senior in one of his math classes, Lena Hoffmann. The two carried on for a few months happily. Then, Lena asked Markus to leave his wife for her once she'd matriculated, he refused to say anything on the subject, and she told Eve about the affair in an effort to force him into monogamy. It didn't work.
Freshly slapped with several trial dates, all of which he lamented after losing the cases, Markus moved to That Country, poor, single and rather put off women altogether. He worked various jobs in Strauss, his new title as sex offender keeping him from getting a job as a teacher, and lived alone. That is, until he met Chie. He saw Chie experimentally for a few weeks, wondering if perhaps all three of his women had been unluckily mental, until he learned that she was the daughter of Harold Arrowny, headmaster of Schubert's Second Heaven High. Markus swears this information never colored his feeling for Chie, but the two did become very serious after the fact was announced.
Married in spring, five months after they became an item, Markus is now learning to deal with Arrowny's entourage, as well as the man himself. He lives in the family compound, surrounded by Japanese and American alike, distant, attempting to be courteous and simply confused. He's happy for his new job, however.
Personality
Keywords:
As a highly theoretical thinker, Markus' way of dealing with things isn't the most realistic. He is extremely to the point and honest, sparing no detail that could be useful. But, if he doesn't like someone, he won't speak to them about anything that isn't required by law or his job (or familial duty, sadly, it's becoming inescapable). His emotional responses rarely break the surface, but they heavily influence how he carries himself around certain people in the future. Depending on their characteristics, he assigns people conditions. If so and so is easily angered, don't speak to them unless spoken to, etc. Keeping everything in stasis is his biggest concern, aside from preserving his own skin, or course.
He has a terrible tendency of sticking his foot in his mouth and because of this, speaks very little altogether. His dislike of formalities stems from the fact that he doesn't understand them. Mr., Mrs., -san, -sama, and elbows off the table is about as far as he can get without offending. Markus isn't easily embarrassed and usually shrugs off the slights he manages to notice he's made. Most people who do put stock in formalities consider him to be very arrogant In actuality, he is a little arrogant, but mostly just negligent.
Other prevalent traits include vanity (he has a daily skin regiment, an immaculately constructed wardrobe and shoes with almost imperceptible lifts in them), reliability (if he knows someone is counting on him, he'll do what needs to be done - no matter what. As long as his ass isn't on the line, of course), an inability to apologize (though he doesn't believe in making excuses), and naivety.
Members of the opposite sex (and some of the same), find him to be very charming, most likely because of the startling amount of attention he can pay to a single person. Actually, he just has that kind of energy which, again, either makes him seem magnetic or very, very creepy.
