Sene Alaiya
From Secondchance
[edit] for i must die for what i've done;
Sene never speaks much of his past, at all. A careful observer can notice that he speaks High Realm with a native's accent, the accent of someone well-born on the Blessed Isle: that he is very well educated, and that despite his demure, almost hesitant, manner, there are shades of a noble's pride and bearing, even a faint echo of arrogance that flickers and is gone. If pressed, he may admit that he was born to a patrician family that had allied itself with House Ledaal, and that he had been in the Threshold when he had Exalted as a Twilight, and had never returned home.
In reality, that is a lie. While there is an Alaiya family that has allied itself with House Ledaal, known for their skill in thamaturgy and learning, and there was a son named Sene born to that family, the young man calling himself Sene Alaiya is not the same, for the real Sene Alaiya, a timid slip of a boy who was easily forgotten, was studying in the ultimately doomed city of Ameraille, city of scholars and thamaturges, when a mad Twilight by the name of Ledaal Memoria, the Ashen Maiden, marched an army of the undead against the city of scholars and razed it to the ground, and died in the darkness before dawn.
In reality, Sene is Ledaal Memoria, a daughter born to House Ledaal, educated in the fine manner of a future Princess of the Earth, and Memoria had no doubts in her mind that she would Exalt. She was brilliant, pious, dutiful: surely the Dragons would find her worthy of their gift. But, alas, she grew up, and remained stubbornly mortal, and wept and raged inside. Why? She had done everything right, been the best daughter that her family could have asked for, what had she done wrong?
At the age of twenty, she was in the Threshold, on a brief trip, in Ameraille, and one night, she lay awake, studying a passage that had eluded her, thus far, for its meaning.
And in a single moment of clarity, when she had at last realized the meaning of what she read, she also saw that her hands were glowing golden. And in that single horrified moment, when she realized what she had become-Anathema-and that she would never, ever, be a Dragon-Blooded, never be pure or holy or graced by the Dragons, that she had become a demon, something snapped inside her. If she was a monster, then she would be a monster.
She disappeared, and learned necromancy, having come across a copy of the Book of Bone and Ebony. And one night, at dusk, she reappeared at the head of an army of the undead, marching upon Ameraille. They could not muster enough defense to stop her, and before the morning, the city burned, most of the inhabitants massacred in the resulting bloodbath. Perhaps she would have marched on another city and destroyed it, save for the timely interference of the Wyld Hunt, who destroyed her zombies, and harried her, until at last she was alone, standing against the last of them.
None of the Wyld Hunt that faced her that day survived, but Memoria herself was gravely wounded. She crawled into the forest, dragging herself by force of will, coming across an old manse that had lain hidden for a very long time.
And while she was on the threshold of dying, she came back to her senses, and realized just what she had done.
She was there for several months, recovering, and thinking, and realized that she had to atone.
And that day, it wasn't Ledaal Memoria, the proud mad daughter of the Realm, but Sene Alaiya, the sad broken healer boy, who walked out of the manse.
Sene has been struggling, since then, to atone for all the sins that lie on his head.
(and maybe then, once he has atoned, he can die, for a monster does not belong in this world)
[edit] as the daylight falls;
Sene is a tall, slender, rather pretty young man, with the pale, fine-boned beauty of someone of Dynastic heritage, with blue-green eyes and short, black-dyed hair, that is beginning to grow out again. He dresses simply, entirely in deepest violet clothes that are obviously mourning clothes-but for who, or what, he is mourning for, he never speaks of. His expression is gentle and somber, and he never smiles, or laughs. His voice is surprisingly deep, given his feminine looks, and sweet, with the accent of a highborn person from the Realm.
Hidden beneath long sleeves are his jade hearthstone bracers, delicate blue jade bracelets that wind around his wrists, the Hearthstone of Gender-Changing set into them.
Memoria had long, pale hair, that she wore elaborately beribboned, and dressed in blue and white, beautifully made silk dresses. She smiled frequently, though it was more a "I know something you don't know" smile, and her voice was sweet and low.
[edit] for you i'd burn the length and breadth of sky;
Memoria was proud and arrogant, as befitted a daughter of the Scarlet Dynasty, as well as driven and stubborn, a strong, fiercely-capable woman. In her madness, she was glorious, but terrible, and merciless, and she laughed as Ameraille burned.
Sene is not Memoria. He is not the princess who went mad and destroyed eagerly.
Sene is a quiet, shy, sorrowful young man, who is demure and hesitant, but with the faint fragments of a noble's pride, and even faint shades of arrogance, glimmering through. He refuses to draw a weapon save in the defense of others, a healer and crafter foremost, seeking something to build.
