Backstory

Samson's father up and takes off, or is maybe killed, or something inconclusive. His mother raises him and he grows up in the dullest town in the land.

Kohikki becomes enamored of Samson and rises to prominence as the best tailor evar.

One day Samson tells a really bad joke to his friend Orochi, who makes the most indifferent face ever seen in the land. When Orochi's face freezes that way, he leaves town, vowing revenge on Samson.

Orochi's twin brother Alastour, stricken by the loss of his brother (the details of which he never learned), begins training as a samurai and ninja so that one day he can find out what happened to Orochi and avenge his fate.

7 years before the story begins, K and Cowboy become enemies after Meta's treachery leads K to kill Cowboy's wife and take his daughter, Boxers, whom he then raises (see History of Cowboy and K)

Zac's faraway kingdom is attacked and taken over by Meta's henchmen, and Meta's wizard, matrix, turns him into a turtle. Zac flees to the fairy forest.

The fairy forest is turned into a strip mall by reborn, the evil subcontractor hired by Meta. The few surviving fairies, as well as Zac, are driven from their homes.

Deciding he could use a day trip, Meta visits Akari the oracle to see if she can tell him anything useful. She warns him that his evil dominion will be threatened by the emergence of a person who holds the power to defeat him within his or her heart. He of course demands to know who and where this person is, but the only detail Akari gives him is that the person's place of birth is a village inhabited by blacksmiths. Meta immediately sends out his henchmen K and Boxers to find this village and kill everyone in it.

En route to the blacksmith village to try to stop Meta's henchmen from destroying the place, Lirpa passes through Samson's town just as Samson says "I'm really bored." Hearing what he thinks are the words "Give me that sword," Lirpa goes to Samson's house and presents the sword to him. The sword immediately eats Samson's pants, which tells Lirpa that the sword has found its true master. He sends Samson along on the quest, giving the bewildered new hero only very basic instructions, and Kohikki the tailor insists upon going with him.

When they arrive at the blacksmith village, they find the place already leveled and no survivors. Unbeknownst to them, Cille has already left and gone into hiding to recover from her injuries and prepare to go after Meta.

Lirpa tells them that they must find Cille and protect her, but that she cannot know about her powers.

Eventually they meet up with Cille and, after sharing the story of how she returned from a shopping trip to find her village had just been destroyed and everyone she knew killed, and then she ran into the two fiends responsible for the carnage and they thought she was a travelling peddler and roughed her up, she joins them to go find Meta.

The group finds Zac the turtle on his back in the middle of a road and rescues him. He joins them, largely thanks to Kohikki thinking he's cute.

Queen makes her first appearance and robs the group. Fortunately they didn't have much to begin with.

The group meets kirara when they stay the night at one of her parents' inns. She and Samson take a shine to each other, and she goes with them against her parents' wishes.

Lirpa sends the group on some treasure hunt, where they meet up with Queen again. She sees kirara's necklace, recognizes it as a fabled locket that contains the power of loooove, and starts tailing the group and trying to rob them from time to time; eventually she joins up as a regular member.

The group meets Top Gun in his junkyard and gets him to fly them to the next town because they're tired of walking. On the way they are raided by Pierrot the evil pirate ninja, whom they defeat and accidentally destroy his boat. In gratitude of finally stopping the raides, Top Gun agrees to go along with them and let them use his flying ship to get around.

The group meets luna at a bar. She is enthralled by the stories they tell of their adventures, and when she learns that they shockingly lack a bard in their group to write epic poetry about them and regale them with song, she insists on coming along.

At some point we need to meet Q and Trunks, and bherm, and everybody else, and they get worked into the ongoing adventures.

Samson's group randomly hears stories from fisherman about an evil pirate that destroys entire crews and sinks every ship he comes across.

The sexual tension - I mean, relationship between Cille and Cowboy progresses very very gradually. At one point she makes a sword that she secretly hopes he might use, but it's not until his own sword breaks in battle that he accepts her sword and discovers how very kickass it is. He is reticently appreciative, and later saves her with that very sword. Bonding and character development ensue.

Orochi, who with his twin brother Alastour has been after Samson for a while, finally shanks Samson, who ends up in a coma. The group takes him to be healed by Ghost, who explains that the only way to save him is through the power of loooooove. After several episodes in which the rest of the group goes out in search of this power to save him, Ghost finally gets around to pointing out that the power is contained in kirara's locket, and so she is able to save her beloved and they get to smooch and it's cute.

Orochi mentally collapses after his shank attack fails to kill Samson... Alastour goes out to finish the job and hopefully restore some sanity to his brother.

Dub Piece filler arc in which Meta forms an alliance with Samson and his group to fight the greater evil of Dub Piece. Once Dub Piece is vanquished, they go back to being enemies.

Meta throws a birthday party for himself and invites everyone, including Samson and his entourage. Lirpa decides that this would be a good opportunity for Samson to try to seduce Meta in order to get close to him and do him in. Samson steals kirara's dress while she's bathing and goes to Meta's fortress with Kohikki as his date. Hilarity ensues.

Trunks finally faces reborn, who was responsible for the destruction of his home and the deaths of many of his friends. Although he has always seemed inept with fairy magic, Trunks reveals that he has one great magical power - an attack that takes out his opponent at the unfortunate cost of his own life. Trunks ultimately sacrifices himself to save Q and his friends, proving himself as a tragic hero and not just bumbling comic relief.
