Ekool is a school app created in 2002, It is used in several Estonian schools.

eKool is a school management system used in Estonia covering 90% of the nation's school network connecting all the pupils, parents and teachers involved. It is estimated that this application is used by 28-30% of Estonians in total. The name eKool means eSchool in Estonian.

The system is usable for teachers, pupils and parents to exchange information about time tables, grades, homework assignments and other similar features. eKool was created in 2002 by Look@World foundation in cooperation with companies from the private sector. It was originally designed to meet the requirements of four test schools: Rocca Al Mare School, Jüri Gymnasium, Kuressaare Gymnasium and Tallinn Arte Gymnasium. Since then it has grown to cover 90% of Estonian school network.

[edit] History

eKool started in 2002 to replace printed school diaries by digital journals which would enable parents and students to see their grades and homework assignments online. The pilot project was launched by the specifications of 4 schools: Rocca Al Mare School, Jüri Gymnasium, Kuressaare Gymnaasium and Tallinn Arte Gymnasium. The initial Look@World program ended in 2005 after which it was turned into a private company: Koolitööde AS. In the next few years the eKool mostly expanded over the Estonian school system reaching over 420 schools by 2012.

Since 2014 eKool is also supported by mobile application which allows students and parents to access their information from mobile phones. However schools and teachers still need to use a computer.

[edit] Functionalities

eKool can be accessed by combination of user-name and password, Estonian ID-card, Estonian Mobile-ID, Smart-ID or through online bank identification. eKool can be used by various interest groups: school personnel, students, parents and to some extent the local government overseeing their own school's. With one user account a person can access functionalities for different user groups where the user belongs to.

The schools personnel carries out most of the data entry process to eKool which latter can be used by all parties that have right to access the information. Among the information schools provide are:

  • E-Journal
  • Timetable
  • Lesson topics and homework
  • Grades
  • Absences of students
  • Notifications of school events and news

The parents and the students can access the information and keep themselves up to date. From their own side they make it easy for the school to collect contact information because parents and students enter it themselves and keep eKool updated by using it.

[edit] Why Is It Rubbish And An Hidden Homework Farmer

  1. It has hidden homework, NO LIE!
    • Some teachers force students to use EKool even though the student doesn't have internet/devices/etc.
    • This reason causes students to farm more missing assignments by just not using eKool
  2. It forces you to use your personal code, address, etc real info before making a new account. It should be completely optional.
  3. It causes people to get in trouble/grounded.
  4. It's insanely overused. Due to the fact it's used in 95% of Estonian Schools.
  5. False advertising: While some parents say it's only for teachers and parents, some students even have it at home!
  6. It replaces normal homework in schools.
  7. They have YouTube and Facebook, but they use Facebook the most since their YouTube account was last active 8 months ago. Resulting on doxxing or leaking of privacy. []
  8. Their messaging app has very pointless and limited use.
  9. Their Twitter account was last active in May 2014, which is nine years of no activity, It's also dated "EkoolUSA" on the tag while it's not an American/US brand and doesn't have USA offices.
  10. It has no moderation service. They secretly allow racism, impersonation, nudity, swearing, etc on the website.
  11. It also only accepts JPG pictures smaller than 1 MB despite them mentioning that they support more formats!
  12. It has a extremely tiny and only Estonian-speaking community. Almost nobody from this website doesn't use their real name, speaks other languages, especially their real face in the PFP feature.
  13. It is the most used education system in Estonia, even though it is absolutely terrible.
  14. It has some improperly recognizable grades.
  15. Communication with users are very hard to peform.
  16. Sometimes they give out "free" eKool Perepakett, which is mostly a scam since it still costs dollars.
  17. Horrible PFP cropping. The crop box gets offbox when you try to scale/drag it with your mouse!
  18. The ideas website is pointless and can only be used to comment/reply to people and spamcreate ideas.
  19. In the Ideas website, it has moderation. but TERRIBLE! because mostly removes your comment/idea when you speak any other language than Estonian (ex: English)!
  20. It gives random "Error" screens.
  21. According to the statictics, it's has more users than CV-Online, but not Postimees, auto23 and Delfi. Which is probably stupid.
  22. It claims to be free of charge, but there are still paid features.
  23. They leaked their own HQ location in eKool for contacting.
  24. The mKool app has very hard navigation, which is why it has lower than 4 stars on Google Play Store and App Store.
  25. Some of their YT videos contain personal info that can expose someone/them
  26. There are also schools that don't count as schools at all, but rare.
  27. According to someone on change.org named Joonas Lass, it once in 2017 made the grade statistics only available for eKool premium users, like, what the hell?! What if someone wants to view it in an different way?
  28. Not only eKool can make people in troble, but expose their secrets.
  29. Most teachers also misuse the "Missing" feature if someone comes in early/late/is already here, but doesn't act normally.
  30. According to a Estonian news website named Forte, there was once a website named mKool (not to be confused with the mobile app), which advertised that they cloned and fixed the eKool website's problems, but it got removed from the website quickly and is unknown if it's still archived.
  31. According to Forte also, eKool has also problems with loading speed depending on your internet connection.
  32. Sometimes, some photos might be way too childish.
  33. On 17th March 2020, eKool had a server lockdown due to COVID-19. Also, due to 150K students in Estonia being caught with the Coronavirus, they would have gotten in trouble.
  34. You cannot remove/leave/edit certain stuff, which is stupid.
  35. Some teachers/schools probably also praise eKool like a gosh.
  36. You can get your identity banned from the eKool Ideas website if you impersonate the staff. It will also disable account creation for 7 days.
  37. No matter what school, you cannot remove people from your class when they were late/missing many times.
  38. They have a feature that allows people to view school pages before requesting, but extremely broken.
  39. There is also somehow an "Add event" button when you're not yet on the school and viewing the school page, but doesn't work at all.
  40. People also have nightmares of it.
  41. No downvote feature on ideas.
  42. Sometimes the school requests take way too long to be approved or get declined for a unfair reason.
  43. They once made a very inappropriate ad that someone's parent reported it and got removed.
  44. The prices of eKool Perepakett is both different in mobile and PC, which is recognized as a scam also. This is true according to a user on Reddit [2]
  45. Instead of idea being reviewed when sent, what about it being instantly public in the category named "Approval Pending"
  46. Rarely, it goes down for no reason.
  47. Ideas rarely get approved
  48. To make things even worse, they never fixed the grade statistics being only for Premium users.
  49. People are also sick of it and really want to switch to alternate websites such as Studium or Opiq
  50. There are people who don't use Estonian or English on their eKool page, but extremely rare. That indicates it didn't expand to other countries aswell
  51. When making an account, it reverts back to English for no reason.
  52. Sometimes grades by teachers can be inaccurate or lies
  53. Since they don't have personal info protection or 2-step verification, your account can be hacked very easily.
  54. In the wiki, you cannot make an account or log in with your eKool/MediaWiki account.
  55. Creating an account in the wiki is also restricted to administrators, but logged out users cannot be ranked to different ranks, which means it's impossible to make an account.
  56. The wiki is deserted and most of the premade pages are empty
  57. Ene, the only admin on their wiki is very inactive, making edits for mostly months, or even years at a time.
    • In addition, from September 2011 to December 2022, he blocked four users manually, that's 11 years of almost no activity!

[edit] Redeeming Qualities

  1. It's still usable for school purposes
  2. You can still secretly spamtask/idea the website.
  3. It approves any other language rarely.
  4. You can fake your info.
  5. Impossibly, some teachers don't use it/use it very rarely.
  6. Rarely moderators can approve English, but they still mostly approve Estonian.
