The ubiquitous search engine deserves its own section because of the large number of useful online applications it has developed over the last few years. Here is a description of just a few.
- iGoogle: a personalized version of the Google homepage that allows you to place blog feeds and numerous widgets right on your desktop.
- Google Reader: a blog aggregator that allows you to collect all your favourite blog posts in one list, so you don't have to go from site to site.
- Google Docs is an online office suite. Your documents are stored on Google's servers, so you can work on them wherever there is an internet connection. Documents can be shared and edited by multiple users.
Blogging Tools
Most blogging tools offer a free basic version, and charge for extra features. First Class has a a basic blogging tool built in, and it is very easy to use. Several teachers (Mr. Shum is a good example) have used it.
Bookmarking Tools
Photo and Video Sharing Tools
- Flickr: photo organizing and sharing that works with a Yahoo mail account
- Youtube: completely unrefereed comments make Youtube an unpredictable tool to use in the classroom. Current network restrictions mean that videos have to be downloaded. Refer to other tools listed here.
- Vimeo: high definition video site
- Voice Thread (written and oral comments linked to images, PDFs)
Social Networking Tools
- Facebook: the extremely popular social networking tool has many layers of privacy and works well for discussion and small group situations.
- Ning: create your own social networks.
Wiki Tools
Word Processing/Presentation/Office Tools
- Slideshare: share your PowerPoint presentations via the web,.
